"I like being on the road and playing shows a lot, but nothing beats being home and spending time with my family. today i got to have an impromptu writing session with Lily. She liked this chord progression i played and just started humming and singing melodies over it. I do this a bunch too when i’m in the infancy of writing a new song, so it made my heart explode that she was naturally doing the same thing. sometimes a vocal melody or lyric comes first, sometimes it’s music... it’s a dream come true when they all come at the same time. But often songs take shape when i’m just playing a progression i like and humming nonsense over it until i find a melody or vocal sound that hooks my ear. I’ll often get locked into a vowel sound and that dictates the lyric... i remember one instance when recording Barriers, i kept hitting a road block on one song vocally and Steve said why not just change that one word? and i replied it’s not that easy, it’s gotta have an “ah” sound and he looked at me like i was totally nuts. 🤷♀️"
