99% of the 78 municipalities that make up Puerto Rico suffered a drop in population, according to the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics.
The Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics (IEPR) recently released a study showing a 2% decline in the island's population from 2020 to 2022. Out of the 78 municipalities in Puerto Rico, 99% experienced a population loss with Rincón being the only exception with a slight increase of 0.8%. The south and west of the island were the hardest hit, with 15 municipalities seeing a decrease of more than 3%. The trend of decreasing population has been ongoing for nearly two decades in Puerto Rico.
