The New York Times did a story on Poundbury a few days ago (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/23/arts/design/king-charles-architecture-poundbury.html), where it mentions rules such as not being able to paint your house a new color "without the consent of His Royal Highness." Takes me right back to the 15th Century. Speaking of which, the photos, with their people-less streets bathed in cold light, are pretty unsettling and remind me of those "ideal city" paintings from the Renaissance.
Anyway, if you think Poundbury is bad, the story later mentions that property developers are now copying its look but without any of the thinking that went into it -- which, just, ugh.
the poundbury saga continues! i know it's not serfdom but it has the same energy as serfdom if you get what i mean
i was about to say "i can't believe they're copying it" but actually i can
