who sings medical love song?
quoth Eric Idle (in A Liar's Autobiography's A Bit After The End):
"In October 1989 as Graham lay dying I was editing a collection of Python songs, and had been searching in vain for the original recording of a song Graham and I wrote together called 'Medical Love Song'. I finally found it the day he died, and played it with tears rolling down my cheeks as Graham sang:
I left my body to scienceBut I'm afraid they turned it down"
When did you first get into Monty Python? What's your fave sketch? Why is Graham Chapman your favourite? Hope you feel better soon <3
like a #ProperBrit (lol I'm not even properly British but regardless) I was raised on Python, so I can't really remember a point at which it wasn't part of my consciousness?? more bizarrely I can't actually put my finger on when I started properly adoring the thing (although I do remember high school friends repeatedly whinging at me for suggesting Life of Brian as a sleepover DVD, and ofc the obsession was long since in full swing by the time I, you know, arbitrarily chose to attend a university I knew nothing about other than the fact that it was where Gray qualified as a doctor).Β
I have so many favourite sketches; um, I most frequently cite Llamas (I believe I called several people immediately to relay the good news when Terry Jones leaked the fact that it was going to be the first Live Mostly sketch), Biggles Dictates A Letter ("you demented fictional character"), Four Yorkshiremen (which I know I know is not actually from MPFC but they did it at the Hollywood Bowl and at the reunion shows so shhh), Mary Queen of Scots (which was fun fact!! written by David Sherlock and I am still so mad that they did it at Live Mostly but didn't credit him as a writer in the programme what the heck Eric) and Dirty Fork ("and now, the punchline"), but ugh that doesn't begin to scratch the surface at all.
and as for why Graham is my favourite...askghdgklsgng. I think I once posted a v v long-winded response on Why Gray Is The Bae as a response to an anon (ayyyy I did some digging and found the thing), but ahhhh, I don't know: I admire him as an actor (like u know he has to be good when the fact that "he was the best actor of the lot of us" is something all of the other Pythons can actually agree on unanimously); I admire who he was and what he achieved as a person; I identify with him to a frankly self-indulgent degree; I just...ugh, idk, Gray was amazing. All the Pythons are amazing, but Gray forever inhabits a special corner of my heart (#QueerAlcoholicLoonySolidarity or something, idk). <3
thank you, Anon!!
can I just take a moment to make it clear how I am in equal measures stunned and immensely proud that the Python fandom appears to be as yet to capitalise on the pun that is "Fifty Shades of Gray"
sometimes listening to the audience reactions in episodes of Flying Circus seriously blows my mind?? like holy shit, those people are laughing so hard because they literally didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition.

almost a year on I honestly think the best part of being at Live Mostly was the entire audience singing The Liberty Bell to "doo doo, doodoodoodoo doo, doo doo" when the show started.
sir-interesting-shockleton has tagged me in the Python Song Meme and (I am screaming a lot over how cool it is, oh my God): put your music library on shuffle and give each Python one song, then tag three people. So!!
Communication Breakdown, Led Zeppelin - I just envisioned John announcing his departure from MPFC to this and I genuinely never expected to laugh this hard at such a tragedy (to say nothing of this song's relevance to Cleesio's marital history, of course~).
Teen Idle, Marina and the Diamonds - I am dedicating this to Eric (and not just for the gorgeously convenient pun I swear I am thinking more in terms of Eric's own teen years).
Float On, Modest Mouse - I get such a Gils vibe off most Modest Mouse songs u have no idea.
Behind Blue Eyes, The Who - I am gonna have to delegate this to Gray (and if I swallow anything evil; also not least Because Keith Moon) and oh shit now I'm really sad.
Bubblegum Bitch, Marina and the Diamonds - ...shit this could also have gone to Gray (and would have been much less depressing jfc) but in the interest of Meme Integrity I am assigning this to Carol instead.
Anarchy In The UK, Sex Pistols - and another potentially non-depressing Chapman Song; um, this could be Terry J? (insert that pic of Oxford Bad Boy Era Terry here)
This Charming Man, The Smiths - the only Python to whom I haven't assigned a song yet is Mikey and oh my god it's fate.
aaaand I tag whoever feels like doing the thing (seriously what a Good Meme) but to name names, um, ginfromteacups, notwiselybuttoowell and tterryjones. <3
