        anger is the only thing keeping joe going; it lights a fire under his ass, drives him forward when it’d be so easy to sink into the mud and go nowhere at all. because sure, there are good moments among his buddies, times when his laughter is genuine and true, but most of the time, what joe’s feeling ain’t anything close to good. he’s scared, and tired, and miserable; anger provides a warmth that makes it easier to forget that shit, makes it easier to pretend like he’s not a fucking mess.

        he doesn’t want to be weak. it’s the last thing he wants, and anger makes joe feel as though he’s marching into battle with a steel breastplate and enough ammo to kill every damn kraut in the army.
