Niagara Falls paused for 30 hours beginning March 29, 1848 when an ice jam upstream stopped the flow. (picture is from Niagara Falls in the very early 20th century, but the 1848 stoppage probably looked very similar)
Went for a walk this morning. Susquehanna river ice jam near Hiawatha Island in Apalachin, New York.

Page 01. ---- With a roar that drowned out the rumble of Niagara Falls, the famous Falls View Bridge collapsed late yesterday, after being pounded for two days by the worst ice jam in 30 years in the Niagara River. The 1,260-foot span broke into four pieces as it plunged into the gorge below. The picture shows the entire length of the span, most of the roadway still intact, after it collapsed. Plans for a new span are being discussed.
