Bonfire
Spring was slowly transitioning into Summer. The day got unreasonably hot but the nights cooled dramatically. The clouds were finally gone that night, leaving a crystal clear sky. Seeing all the stars, even a planet. It was the perfect night for a bonfire, with a side of smores.
Gian dragged the metal box out onto his driveway. The bonfire pit weighed at least fifty pounds with the burnt wood that piled inside. Not even touching the metal for five minutes, ash cover his fingers. "Fuck."
"We don't use that type of language." Gage piped up from behind the shorter man, carrying fresh pieces of cut logs.
"Shut up, fuckboy." Gian smiled and went to collect his lighter from inside.
The two had planned on a calm night cuddled up by the fire, looking up at the stars. They'd been dating for only a couple months now and snuggling up on the couch had become their favorite activity. But now it's time for a new change of scenery.
Gage set up a lawn chair and blanket in front of the pit and waited for his pyrotechnic to come back.
Gian came back and started to stuff newspapers between the logs. Lighting it and waiting for a fire to catch.
Two arms wrapped from behind and pulled him into a warm embrace. Gian found himself on Gage's lap with a blanket wrapped around them both. He laid his head on the senior's shoulder, letting the cologne smell enter his memory.
"Look." Gage pointed up towards the sky was stars slowly appeared above them. "You see that really bright one? It's named after you because you light up my world."
"That's really cheesy."
"It's true!" Gage could feel the junior smirk into his neck.
"I know. You see the bonfire?" Gian brought Gage's eyes back to his. "It means you warm my heart with every gaze."
The two boys fell asleep in each others arms through the night as the fire soon died out. Keeping each other warm and safe.
