Yesterday l was able to bid my farewell to a great friend, Patricio Azcarate Diz. At age 17, Patricio volunteered to come from Geneva to serve the Spanish Republic and worked as a translator for the International Brigades. It has been a joy, a privilege and an honour to count Patricio amongst my friends and his relentless fight for the Republican values will drive me for the rest of my life. Make Patricio and the other 35,000 antifascist volunteers in the lnternational Brigades proud: pick up where they left and carry the torch for Liberte, Egalite and Fraternite. Scorn capitalism, corruption and greed and embrace the fight for social justice. We have an eternal debt with the Brigaders who risked everything because they had a clear conscience and a generous and brave soul. Their bodies are no longer here but their spirit remains. It is our duty to carry the torch for them.
