To All The Third Culture Kids,
How do you feel about the term ācultural appropriationā?
I am a third culture kid (ahem, adult) myself, and Iām stuck in the middle. On the one hand, I understand, and on the other hand, I donāt really see it that way.
I love other cultures, not just as a tourist looking into a zoo, but every time Iāve moved, Iāve put a little part of me into that country and taken a little part of it to make me who I am. Was that wrong? I donāt feel bad though, I feel enriched. But every time I read about someone of a different culture wearing a sari and getting offended, I feel - disconnected. How does someone know whether that person is trying to experience and learn about the culture, vsĀ āexploitingā it. I just donāt see it that way, and maybe thatās cause Iām missing a distinction.
Itās not that I donāt see race, or see culture. Iām not blind to it. I see them ALL. Somehow that seems to be another issue. Ā
Anyone else? Maybe Iām the only one. I donāt know.
I donāt want to argue, I just want a discussion. Ā
Helpful definitions:
Cultural Appropriation: The adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture.
āCultural appropriation is an entirely different matter. It has little to do with oneās exposure to and familiarity with different cultures. Instead, cultural appropriation typically involves members of a dominant group exploiting the culture of less privileged groups ā often with little understanding of the latterās history, experience and traditions.ā - Source
Third Culture Kids (TCKs): A person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside their parentsā culture. The third culture kid builds relationships to all the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the third culture kidās life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of the same background, other TCKs.ā - Source
Hey, ask anything to me and I will ask you back. Let's start something guys. :)
like why would you ever support an organization with a name as blatantly fanatical and paramilitaristic as "Salvation Army" anyway?
