#7 Little Bird by Darcy Van Poelgeest and Ian Bertram 3.5 stars . The story was relatively simple, the USA has become a Christian Empire and are attempting to take over the wild-lands of Canada, with Little Bird, a wild Canadian, charged with saving the world. However, it’s not the story that drives this dystopian graphic novel, but the art. My good friend Mike, who hails from Canada, called a short while ago, as he had just run into his LCS as well as the writer & creator of LITTLE BIRD, Darcy Van Poelgeest! Mike was awesome enough to circle back and picked me up a signed copy as I’m a huge fan. With LITTLE BIRD, Poelgeest delivers an incredibly rich dystopian narrative that screams to be read. Genius work brought to life by Ian Bertram’s horrifically beautiful artwork, pulls the reader deeper into the intrigue, mystery, and power struggle that takes place as one swims the panels of LITTLE BIRD. (Interestingly, I found Bertram’s work at times reminiscent of early concept work for the David Lynch version of Frank Herbert’s Sci-Fi epic DUNE (1984). Matt Hollingsworth captures and translates the emotions of Poelgeest’s gripping narrative, through color palate, taking an ‘Everything is Rosey’ approach and slowly peeling the skin off, layer by layer, exposing the raw nerves beneath, successfully building an infectious thread of undertones; the maternal figure, innocence lost, lust, action vs in-action, power, struggle, hope, life, death, conspiracy, family, and aggression. And so much more! Following the titles main characters, in their sometimes poignant existence, under this monstrous uber-theocratic regime, leaves me full of wonder, and salivating to get my hands on the next issue! Bravo and thank you to all who make LITTLE BIRD from IMAGE COMICS a reality. Don’t miss a masterpiece unfolding, jump in & see a creative team proving Panel Alchemy exists! I would calculate LITTLE BIRD is the result of challenging but rewarding work, imagination in action, creativity, as well as evidence of expert craftsmanship! LITTLE BIRD from @imagecomics has totally rocked the ground under my feet. The title is genius. Characters, narrative, an artistic delicacy, a title that could so easily be overlooked.
