Fear?
Virgil had many fears, being the embodiment of anxiety will do that.
What's one of those fears you may ask?
The others, especially his boyfriend Roman, hating him again.
He knew they wouldn't lying when they accepted him, spending years with a lying side made it so he could see through even a smallest of lies, but still he couldn't help but think every time he walks down those stairs to the living room that everything was some dream his mind conjured up. Some wonderful blissful dream...
And one day that fear slammed him in the face.
It was a normal day, or so he thought, as he woke up in his bed blinking against the ceiling as he tried to will himself to get up. It was another late night and as he checked his phone..yep it was a late morning too but hey at least the others will be up and quiet hopefully.
He yawned as he grabbed his clothes and headed towards the bathroom to get ready for the day.
When he finally started down the stairs it was in the early afternoon and he could hear the others talking and their laughter. Hearing that made a small smile appear on his face, it was always a blessing to hear that even before he was accepted. It meant peace to his ears.
He still had his smile on when he walked the rest of the way down the stairs both of his hands in his jacket and his head ducked down a bit so they couldn't see his smile.
Glancing up he saw Roman and Patton discussing something on the couch, Roman's hands flailing dramatically as always as he spoke and Patton giggling all the while. Logan was reading a book on the armchair not far away but he did glance up to Virgil as he walked in his lips twitching in a smile, "Salutations, Virgil. Good to see you up before the late afternoon though I do wish you would have gone to bed earlier."
"Yeah, yea-"
"What do you want, Anxiety."
His head whipped towards the venomous voice flinching away from it but his eyes went wide as he saw who belonged to that voice. Roman. Roman who just last night kissed him before he went to bed. Who cuddled him the night before when he had a nightmare. The one who vowed to always protect him...was giving him a look that could kill thousands.
He didn't have to look at the others to see that they were staring at him as well.
Did... Did Roman not love him anymore? Was it all just a lie? But... But it didn't feel like a lie...
"Did you hear me, Anxiety? Get out of here before I make you. Nobody wants you here."
Nobody wants you here.
They were lying.
He doesn't love you at all.
How could he?
How could they ever love somebody like you?
He couldn't even see Roman anymore as his vision got cloudy. No, he can't cry. That will just give him the satisfaction.
"Roman what's wrong with you?!"
"Are you sure your okay Roman?"
"Of course I am! Why were you talking to him like some friend, Logan? What are you guys staring at me for? We need to get him away before he affects Thomas!"
Virgil suddenly felt his back hit the wall with a loud thud silencing Patton and Logan. They both looked over at him with wide eyes, but it was with heartbroken eyes. They didn't know what was wrong either.
That drawn Roman's attention back on him as he smirked and got up drawing his sword.
"Aw look guys he's crying! You are a good actor I have to give it to you, but not a good as me."
Virgil felt himself shaking as Roman came at him with his sword, he never thought it would be like this again. If Virgil kept interfering before he often would threaten him with his sword. Often trying to cut him and succeeding a few times as his scars show. But he never thought Roman would come at him with his sword ever again.
His eyes closed shut as he huddled against the wall trying to block this nightmare out. Trying to get away from him before the pain came.
But he didn't feel a thing after a few moments and he peeked open one eye to find Patton blocking his way. His arms was thrown apart and he glared at Roman, a look he's only seen when he had to face against the dark sides. Against the others like him. But he was protecting him...
"Roman... I don't know what has gotten into you but I won't let you hurt my dark son. Put that sword away and take a deep breath."
"But we have to get rid of him, Pat! I don't know what's wrong with you, why you would protect him. He might hurt you! I'm only trying-"
Logan, who has stood up as well when it all happened, quickly took the sword from Roman managing to hit his still hand just right to get him to open up his fist. As soon as he got his sword he took a step towards Patton and Virgil glaring at the hissing Roman.
"He doesn't seem like Deceit. Deceit would go after all of us, not just Virgil. Or at least to my knowledge."
"Wha- Virgil? Who are you talking about? Logan-"
"That only proves my point."
Now that Logan was defending Virgil as well Patton turned around to the cowering Virgil drawing his arms open in a hug. He brought Virgil close to his chest but as those words hit him a sudden thought occurred to him too.
"L-Last night... Before R-Roman went to sleep...h-he mentioned that he had to go on a quick quest.. Maybe..."
"Something happened in the imagination to wipe his memory..." Logan finished.
"Could something do that? Oh... Was it the dragon witch?"
"I don't know what you guys are talking about but fine if you don't want to listen to me then go ahead get hurt. See if I care!"
And with that he stormed off up the stairs before any of them could move, once he was gone his sword poofed away.
Virgil could tell he was still crying and shaking but being in Patton's hold calmed him down at least somewhat as they tried to figure out how to fix this. They had to fix this.
Virgil felt like his heart got shattered into pieces at hearing those words coming from Roman's mouth once again. He couldn't stop crying.
He couldn't stop shaking.
He couldn't stop...
"Virgil! Virgil! Are you alright? Wake up!"
His eyes whipped open as his chest gasped for air. He was crying, was his first thing he noticed. Next thing was there was something warm around him.
The next was Roman's face next to his so close that he could feel his warm breath on his face, and he didn't look angry like moments ago he looked...concerned. His hair was in a mess which looked...cute for him.
"Virgil. Breathe. Come on, Mi Amor, breathe in for 4."
He followed his instructions to the best of his ability but he couldn't even get through it fully without coughing. It took a few more cycles before he was able to breathe alright. Though he still was shaking and trembling a bit.
"Hey.. Hey V it's alright. Can I touch you?"
Virgil hiccuped as he dove forward burying his face in the others chest. He couldn't help but cry some more as his hands dug into Roman's red night shirt.
"Shh. I've got you. Your safe. It's going to be okay. Just keep breathing."
"Y-You... You h-hated m-me..aga-again. I-"
"It's okay ,baby, I promise you I don't hate you. I love you, Virgil."
That was all the words he needed to confirm it was all a dream. A nightmare. Roman won't ever hate him like that again. But still...the mind can be a dangerous thing sometimes.
