December 15, 2023 Bell Gardens: also really rough. I actually had to return here after trying and failing to find something interesting on a previous day. Made another exception to my no-Christmas-decorations rule.

Cudahy got less time from me than it probably deserved. It was getting dark. The mural is a good enough sentiment, I guess, but on a liquor store?
Apparently, South Gate, Lynwood, Commerce, Bell, Maywood, and Cudahy, as well as (spoiler alert) the places I'm planning to cover over the rest of this week -- Bell Gardens, Signal Hill, Lakewood, Bellflower, Santa Fe Springs, Pico Rivera, Montebello, Whittier, Hawaiian Gardens, and La Mirada -- are all part of the Gateway Cities area, sort of the perineum between the scrotum that is Los Angeles and the anus that is Orange County. This cluster of places in the LA area is basically the last bastion of incorporated places in California I haven't visited, and I guess that explains why.

Bell has some murals. And, a power box decorated with... inspirational slogans. I would argue that it IS often okay to not try, e.g. when it comes to trying things that are harmful to you. Christmas decorations aren't usually interesting, but I thought this thing looked cool, whatever it is. I also think it's cool that the city logo of Bell is a bell.
Not shown: pinball at Beer Thug Brewing Company around the corner from where these photos were taken. Good sour beer, great pinball machines!

My original thought behind this project was to spend enough time in each city to really get a sense of it. At least, to spend 10 or 15 minutes walking around downtown. The plethora of different cities that are all basically neighborhoods in LA puts this goal to the test, and really, I'm not hewing to the ideal at all. It all looks the same. It almost certainly _isn't_ the same, but to truly see the differences between say, South Gate and Lynwood, would take more time than I will ever have.
Anyway, this is Maywood. The murals are in a park. The park also has some cool outdoor handball courts, but I couldn't take a picture because there were people playing and I didn't want to be a creep.

South Gate was much like Lynwood, but there was this playground with sculptures I probably would have enjoyed climbing on as a child.

The only association I had with Lynwood is "Weird" Al Yankovic's album "Straight Outta Lynwood". Until just now, though, I hadn't realized he was actually from Lynwood; I thought he was juxtaposing it with Compton as a more bourgeois version of Lynwood. In fact, Lynwood didn't seem much different from Compton. I couldn't find much there that stood out, except maybe this statue in front of City Hall, and maybe not even that.
