“Where did Rip find this guy?”
That is a question Gary was used to hearing in the Time Bureau. Even now that the bureau is disbanded he still hears it from The Legends.
He wishes he had an answer.
The truth is Gary has always wondered where he was picked up, so many of the children who grow up at The Refuge under the promise to become Time Masters do. It’s what he spent most of his early childhood trying to find, maybe a little more obsessively than some of the other kids. Then came that day when he was twelve and they received the news: The Time Masters were no more.
Rip returned to The Refuge and helped Mother Xaiver move them all to a house located in 1988 under the guise of them being a group home of foster children.
For the longest time Gary thought of that as the day everything went wrong. He never fit in in school, and no he didn’t feel like he belonged with the other kids int he house either but at least before the destruction of the Time Masters he’d known where he was going. Yet even after he’d grown up and Rip brought him into the Time Bureau (and it had barely been three years for Rip) he still felt out of place. It was closer to belonging, but not quite.
"Where did he find this guy?” The whispers still keep him up at night, after everything.
But he won’t ever let it consume him again
He remembers, now, sitting locked in the basement of John’s house while literal hellfire rains down outside.
“They were right.” Astra mutters, her face bruised from last night’s battle and that spark of evil in her eyes completely and totally flushed out. “We’re nothing more than broken souls.”
And, hearing that put so bluntly, for the first time in his life, against all odds, things actually feel right.
And that, that gives him hope.
