actually you know what’s a struggle when you want to draw someone who’s objectively ugly in the most unconventional way but you end up prettifying them because you can’t distinguish between a well-drawn ugly character concept from a flat out badly-drawn character concept. to be able to draw well something that’s not pretty has to be the biggest proof someone knows what they’re doing

#i don't have ugly characters #i have badly drawn pieces of characters but none of them showcase someone who's meant to be ugly #convinced this is because of the way society works so it takes time to unlearn it but do you ever think about it #even professional artists? very very rarely have i seen purposely ugly characters unless it's a hag etc #normal ugly!!!!!!!!! WHERE IS IT! HOW DO I DRAW IT!#i practice #that's the answer to everything #this post didn't need to happen just so we're all on the same page #okay one more thing do you know how usual it is for someone to have very uneven eyes and yet if my portrait has uneven eyes #i immediately fix them because if i don't it'll show as if i don't know how the face works #someone who's truly good at this would be able to make it seem intended and natural #is this easier to pull off with lineart or flatcoloring etc? might be when things are simplified #and you're not fighting to have a semi-realistic style #i'm not fighting #well alright i'm fighting but i'm fighting with everything on a subatomic level #fought with the toilet paper today #aren't you disappointed you chose to open the tags and now your entire dash is flooded with this #is there a limit to how many tags a post can have because if i'm about to hit it then this will get real awkward fast #practice practice practice and maybe try to make some ugly characters and attempt to translate them into a canvas with your best skills #then come back and do the same for me. i'll pay you to say it's my own work
