Tempted to reread Allās Well for the purpose of constructing a lengthy rant about how Bertram is the worst Shakespeare character and how his characterization and role in the narrative, despite having significant potential, are precisely what ruin the rest of the play.
Hey would you have liked Bertram more if he was a straight up villain and suffered being disinherited and disowned by his mother. That way Helena gets the inheritance and she actually gets to be a wealthy independent woman who doesnāt need a man. I think the problem about Bertram isnāt the fact heās the worst, itās that Shakespeare expected us to root/like him.
Ah, Bertram. My literary nemesis. Well, him and Freud.Ā
My problem with Bertram isnāt that heās jerk. If Iām being honest, he makes a decent villain. And I donāt think Shakespeare wants us to like him, considering Bertram is just...the worst. My issue is that heās too much of a jerk to be a decent love interest, and hisĀ āredemptionā or whatever happens way too fast.
Bertram goes from hating Helena to just accepting her and loving her for being Such A Clever Lady in literally two lines of dialogue. Itās not believable. He never apologizes for any of his awfulness.
Bertram just doesnāt make sense. There is NO reason for Helena to be as devoted to him as she is. And sheās pretty clearly in love with him in the text; I canāt figure out a convincing way to twist it so that she wants independence. Thatād honestly make for a more interesting play. If Bertram was just a plain villain, Iād find hisĀ character less annoying, but then that just adds to the problems with Helena (who is otherwise an interesting and well-written heroine).
Could you stage Bertram so his jerkish tendencies could be a reaction to the pressure put on him by society? That he might not actually hate Helena, but just be extremely misguided? You could try. But that wouldnāt change the way he treats Diana, which has nothing to do with his familial/social pressures. And letās say a director managed to make him a misguided soul who needs Helena to ground him--that makes the already-disgusting bed trick so much worse.
I do believe Bertram can be staged well; Iāve heard it can happen. But it would take a VERY good director and actor to do so. Iād loveĀ to see a production of Allās Well that manages to make Bertram sympathetic, because I feel like he could be really interesting if done right. The love interest being the villain has so much narrative potential, but based on Shakespeareās text alone, the opportunity is wasted. And this was after heād written Hamlet! Willy Shakes knew how to write characters that challenge your sympathies. But Bertram is just a mess that doesnāt fit in with the context of the play and Iām very mad about it.
Then again, plays are written to be staged, not read. Maybe Bertram can only work in performance. I donāt know.
Challenge:
Tell me one good thing about Allās Well That Ends Well.
Listen, Claudio annoys me as much as the next gal, but Bertram, who is an even bigger asshole, is RIGHT HERE
