As a character, Anders is right up there with Macbeth. He is the reason I consider Dave Gaider and Mary Kirby among my top writing icons of all time. As a person, however, I hope (friend arc) Anders dies a slow and painful death thinking of everyone he betrayed in Kirkwall.

You know why Anders gets to me? I really, really wanted to like this guy. He's a healer, he’s a cat person, he tells corny jokes, he cares about others, he believes in freedom…he can do 'that electricity thing.' What's not to like, right?
We all know he screws Hawke over in the end, but it was around my third run through 'Tranquillity' that I realised something: he’s been screwing Hawke since 'hello.' The very first thing he does when Hawke meets him, is to identify what is most important to him/her in that moment, namely the DR trip so Hawke can get the templars off his/her/Bethany's back, and Anders takes it hostage. It would’ve cost him nothing to hand over the maps – in fact, here's his chance to help another apostate with minimal risk. Instead, he manipulates. If Anders got caught, it was his own ass on the line and maybe Karl's.
Hawke, on the other hand, has a mother, a sibling, an uncle and a dog (and that's only immediate family) that will suffer if he/she gets caught. This doesn’t bother him at all, and that apathy remains until the end of the game. Anders' stance isn't just 'help me save my friend,' it's 'help me save a complete stranger within the next couple of hours or take your own chances with the Order.' That's not how he says it, of course, because most sane people would tell him to piss off in that case. Instead, he turns legitimate concern for loved-ones into ‘selfishness’ on Hawke’s part.
Contrast this with Fenris. He ropes you in via Anso, fair enough. But the first thing he does is apologise, the second thing is to admit that he has nothing to offer, and the third thing he does is to beg for help. If you do help him, he sticks with you, even if he hates your politics. He will torture the guy who let your mother get tortured. He never tells you he loves you, but you never have to wonder what he means by ‘I am yours.’
Two minutes after sex, Anders asks to move in. After which, he proceeds to announce to the whole of Kirkwall that HE loves you. By Act 3, 'I love you,' really means 'you owe me.' But by then, Hawke is so used to this dynamic that he/she doesn’t ask questions that he/she knows they should. Anders knows full well that he is going to destroy not only Hawke’s life, but Varric’s and that of every single person who has been a friend to him, but he still sees HIMSELF as the victim – as the martyr – and that is what I cannot stand. I've known too many people like this and there is nothing noble or heroic about it.
My Hawke never killed Anders. Not because of clemency or second (more like 20th) chances, but as a quid pro quo. Here's Anders, expecting a nice, clean, relatively painless death at the hand of someone who'd maxed out friendship mid-way through Act 2. A person who's capitulated to his each and every insane demand since the moment they met, no matter how much it endangered him and the people he cared about. A man whom he has just made an accessory to terrorism and who now has to ask people like Varric and Aveline and Fenris to throw away the entirety of their lives in Kirkwall to protect mages that Anders has made a target (Elthina refused to grant the Right of Annulment, remember; if they'd gone to her then like Orsino wanted, Meredith might well have been out of a job by morning) and my Hawke was like, "Sorry, Ande. You made this mess. You can damn well wallow in it like the rest of us."
