So, during the last Shabbat the guy sitting in the row before us on shul told my father of an interesting bit he thought was unique to the Rinat Yisrael Sfard Siddur: that in the Musaf of Rosh Chodesh occuring during Shabbat, it adds the "Kadshenu BeMitzvotecha" portion, which is generally absent from Musaf for Rosh Chodesh. I later checked it and found out he was wrong, since a similar Nusach appears in Tehilat HaShem and in the one Mizrahi Siddur I managed to get my hands on.

Now, I think you probably have a more impressive collection of Siddurim than I do, so if you have the time and presence of mind for that can you maybe check where it does and doesn't appear?

I don't know much regarding its source outside of the fact Aruch HaShulchan said it should probably be added, I think I might try to have a look at a more detailed Chabad Siddur.

I actually have a Nusach Sfard Rinat Yisrael siddur so I checked that one and also all of the following to see if "Kadshenu BeMitzvotecha" appears during the Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Musaf:

Koren Nusach Sfard (the non-Chabad Hasidic nusach; siddur printings from 1997 and 2023) - does not appear

Koren Nusach Edot HaMizrach (2024 printing) - appears

Koren Nusach Ashkenaz (1990 and 2024 printings) - does not appear

Tehillat HaShem (Nusach Chabad/Ari)- does not appear

The UK's Daily Book of Prayer (Nusach Ashkenaz, Minhag Anglia) - does not appear

de Sola Pool Daily Book of Prayer (Nusach Sefardi, Western) - appears

Siddur Catalyuna (Nusach Catalonia) - does not appear

Siddur Bene Romi (Nusach Bene Romi, Italian) - does not appear

Artscroll's Wasserman Siddur (Nusach Ashkenaz) - does not appear

Artscroll's Tefillah David HaShalem Siddur (Nusach Sefardi, has notes for Western and Eastern Sefardim, kind of) - appears

Based on the results, I agree that the guy who was talking to your dad was wrong. That said, I also think he might have a different edition of the Nusach Sfard Rinat Yisrael than I do (mine's from '76). The layout of Rinat Yisrael (at least, the ancient one that I have) is kind of weird and makes it look like you'd say the "Kadshenu BeMitzvotecha" portion and the stuff for Rosh Chodesh. I had to stare at the pages for a bit to understand what I was seeing, but the "Kadshenu BeMitzvotecha" portion is completely separate from the Rosh Chodesh section and doesn't get picked up at all. "Kadshenu BeMitzvotecha" gets replaced by "v'chodesh aleinu b'yom ha'Shabbat ha'zeh et ha'chhodesh ha'zeh." (Which is what is seen in Ashkenazi siddurim as well).

It's possible that in the 50 years since my Sfard Rinat Yisrael was printed, the publisher changed it to be more in-line a variant of Nusach Sfard that leans more E"M.

HOWEVER

"Kadshenu BeMitzvotecha" does appear in the Sefardi nusach, both Western and Eastern variants.

Hi. I'll have you know, I had no idea there are people doing Tam Lin posts for Halloween annually - I didn't know how many other Tam Lin posts are going out in the wild. It's just that one of my favourite books is based on the poem and I thought it'd be funny to post something based on the poem.

In short, going through your blog I've been introduced to a number of amazing posts, as well as learned of the existence of @tam-nonlinear. So I would like to thank you, as otherwise I'd have just continued with my life being completely unaware of the swaths of people who make shitposts about a medieval Scottish ballad.

oh, i'm glad. abigail (tam-nonlinear) used to be like, The Tam Lin Poster (mostly serious posts and collected resources about variants of the ballad, but also shitposts). she died in early november 2016 so since then it's become a bit of an annual memorial thing for me, especially as she did used to post more around hallowe'en. one of the things that often makes me sad is that she really wanted her website (tam lin balladry) to continue as a living resource not just an archive, and that hasn't really been possible because it turns out people aren't replaceable and it takes somebody special to run something like that. but whenever i see super detailed analysis posts or statistics comparing variations or whatever, it makes me feel like something of that project endures.

i didn't know abigail very well, we just used to chat on tumblr occasionally. at this point sometimes it feels like the grief left a bigger space than the friendship ever filled in the first place, you know? it happens like that sometimes. but the annual tam lin posting extravaganza is my chance to contribute in a tiny way to keeping both that memory and also the spirit of Tam Lin Balladry going. and it's also an excuse to go out and find the things people have posted about tam lin in the past year since i last ventured into the tag

i also don't celebrate hallowe'en in general so it's a small thing for me to do on the date that isn't being a killjoy lol

Don't know if this falls under this blog's topic, but: I've been kind of curious lately about the evolution of the Reform Nusach in the US. Specifically, I wondered if it's influenced more by Yekke-German traditions (since that's where the movement originated), by Polish/Lithuanian Ashkenazi tradition (which is the most prominent among Israeli Orthodox Jews) or Sepharadi tradition (since it was the prominent tradition in America until roughly the end of the 19th century). So far, my few findings seem to have aligned more with the two latter ones. Do you have any insight? Do you know about any Yekkish influence on the current Reform Nusach?

Unfortunately, I can't say for certain. My copies of the Reform Movement's Union Prayerbooks are at my parents place rn so I don't have easy access to check :/

That said, the Reform Nusach of today is deffo minhag Ashkenaz-Polin, likely because it's become the dominant tradition in a post-WWII landscape.

Fun fact though: the older American Conservative Nusach is influenced by Yekke-Ashkenaz traditions. It's changed overtime so that it now resembles the Ashkenaz-Polin nusach (more obvious in the Sim Shalom series. Less so with Lev Shalem).
