Mathilde's 18aars feste
great great great - TAK FOR FESTEN :-)
Hygge
I know that I've used the words hygge or hyggelit a few times in the blog, but after a weekend in Jutland with Jakob and Kristina visiting Jakob's parents, it's time I give hygge a formal explanation.
So hygge is a noun and hyggelit in turn is its adjective. The quick and dirty explanation is that hygge means coziness. Which it does, but you cannot use “coziness” exhaustively in order to describe it. It’s coziness, togetherness, intimacy, warmth, connectedness all wrapped into one. It’s both a feeling and atmospheric. A hyggelit atmosphere includes warm lighting-lamps and candles (to escape the bitter winters?) comfortable seating, and often time food and drink. It’s a great compliment to a host if you tell them that their dinner party or whatever was “hyggelit.”
(before dinner Saturday night)
This Saturday night was quite hyggelit with Jakob, Kristina, Annette, and Bo. We were stuffed from a delicious (and completely locally grown) dinner and warm with red wine. To rewind after a long day we made coffee and tea, got out a box of assorted chocolates, and put some records on their record player. We set up a slide projector and snuggled up on the couch to look at slides from old family vacations and from when Annette and Bo were my age. We listened to Bob Dylan as we looked at pictures of their hippy wedding clothes. Jakob groaned and tried to skip past embarrassing old photos of him. Kristina had never seen these pictures before, and so she and I had a great time peeking into their “past lives.” The retro combination of records and slide projectors combined with warm drinks and chocolate, candles in the background and spending a relaxing night in was the epitome of hygge in my eyes.
