The Yes song Long Distance Runaround came on the radio when I was driving over to the clinic this morning. I was a Yes fan in high school because 90125 came out during my junior year.
Anyway, as I was listening it occured to me that Les Claypool was clearly influenced by Chris Squire. The way that he gallops around the scales and also moves from runnning with the melody to pushing the rhythm feels very similar to how Les stuff with Primus worked.
I looked and he has called Squire an influence. Along with Geddy Lee which makes a lot of sense.
