Week 1 Field Study [Wonderville]----KILLER QUEEN
It's an astounding game -- I mean the size of it. 5v5, the two big machines present can accommodate 10 players to participate! Of course I initially started 1v1 with my friends. So we can control five characters in our own machine! (This is a bit too crazy...) And this game has three ways to win, which greatly increases the richness of this game. During the heat of our battles, other people would join in, making the game suddenly a massive team play. Therefore, the strategic challenge becomes more difficult, and we have to start carefully considering the allocation of all characters and all resources in the game. We changed from yelling during solo battles to a group of peopleyelling discussing strategies calmly and steadily.
Well, now let me describe the game arcade - it's a game played by two huge game consoles separated left and right, with the left (blue) and right (red) opposing factions. Each faction's game arcade has 5 characters that can be controlled. Each character is assigned a joystick to control the direction and a button to jump (very simple and intuitive). Queen can kill so he assigned two buttons, one for flappy and one for attack. There are different levels of characters, the middle one is the Queen, and the others are minions. They all have things they are good at. Minions can gather and ride snails, soldiers upgraded from minions can only kill minions, and Queen can kill very powerfully. The three ways to win are to collect all the berries, ride the snail to the end, and kill the Queen (the Queen has three lives).
I think the design of the cabinet fits very well with the game. First of all, it effectively distinguishes the camps of multiplayer battles by establishing two independent cabinets. The two cabinets have their own camp colors and interface distinctions. So players can easily get started and participate in the game.
In the design of the interface, it effectively reflects the classification of roles. The Queen is in the middle of all the characters, and the position is slightly larger. The others are all uniform in size. In addition, next to each controller is printed the role's profile and operation instructions. So even a novice will not feel difficult and confused at all.

This weekend I went to Dave&Buster’s Archade Hall! One of the games I tried was Pac-Man. The game consisted of a huge LED-Matrix mounted to the wall, with a small station in front where the user could swipe their card, start the game, and navigate the game with a large joystick. Because of the large screen that blocked out everything else of my field of vision, I felt fully immersed into the game while playing. The audio effects added to that, even though it was slightly hard to hear them due to the overwhelming amount of people and other games in the Archade Hall. The joystick that controlled the direction of the yellow circle on screen had different reaction sensitivities in different directions, meaning that I had to bank it really hard to move to the right, but only very subtly when wanting to change the direction to upwards. The broken joystick was really annoying because it often moved up the yellow circle accidentally instead of to the right.
An alternative controller could be four weight sensor pads, each about 1.5foot long and wide, embedded into the floor arranged in left, right and up, down. Instead of solely moving their hand to control the game, the user would then require to step on/jump on different panels to control the circles movement.

Guitar Hero__Siyuan
The Guitar Hero arcade game, an adaptation of the popular music game franchise, offers a multiplayer experience with two guitars integrated into the arcade cabinet, allowing two players to engage in musical battles. Players have the option to select their Guitar Hero character, adjust the song's difficulty level, and choose to play with or without frets.
To assist players in mastering the guitar controller, the arcade cabinet offers teaching guides video. Typically, players utilize their left hand for fretting the strings and their right hand for plucking, while also tilting the guitar body as required. So colorful buttons are pressed with the left hand, and interaction with the pick is performed using the right hand. Real-time feedback is displayed on the LCD monitor, with a visual connection between the guitar and the game's interface. The effects will tell them if the player is following the sheet music.
In contrast to virtual games, these arcade guitars lack a Start button, meaning that once a song begins, players cannot pause the gameplay using the cabinet's controls. Also, they do not feature a whammy bar. Instead, there is a Star Power energy that can be gradually accumulated by hitting starred notes during designated Star Power phrases. Once the Star Power energy is fully charged, all musical elements are enhanced with special effects. Furthermore, the player's chosen music becomes the backdrop for their gameplay, integrating their own contributions into the soundtrack.
In contrast to the standard horizontal orientation seen in most game franchises, I am wondering if a vertical orientation will let the game be easier to some new players, due to using four fingers to operate five buttons.

I went to Chinatown Arcade. I had so much fun playing all the arcades. I like the Space Invader the most. Space Invader is a 2D format game. Players control a laser cannon to shoot the “space invaders” on the screen. The laser cannon only has one trigger to pull to shoot the invaders. The goal of this game is to shoot and eliminate all the alien invaders. There are different types of alien invaders. As players progress in the game, the invaders move faster and more, making the game more challenging. It has intense music when the game starts, and it plays a special noise when the player pulls the trigger. The controller needs two hands to move it around. There is a sensor on the top of the controller to interact with the interface. An alternate interface for this game could be an immersive 360 interface. The player needs to move the controller 360 degrees to shoot the space invaders.

This game is unbelievably simple and effective. It is a speedboat racing game where the only controls you have are switching lanes, jumping, and boosting. What brings this game to life, however, is how these actions are to be performed. Mashing is not only incentivized, but absolutely necessary if one has any desire to come out on top. The faster you mash your buttons, the faster your boat will move. With all your energy focussed on pressing buttons as fast as possible, paying attention to the other parts of the game becomes incredibly difficult. Jumping at the right times; switching lanes to pick up the right power-ups. Had the movement mechanic simply been “press a to accelerate”, it would quickly grow boring.
Concerning the actual physical components of the experience, the controller consisted of one joystick and 3 buttons. Two of the buttons were for mashing/accelerating, and the other for jumping. The joystick was used to switch lanes. The cabinet was chunky, and seemed extremely resistant, which in my mind, allowed me to mash much harder than I normally would. I was practically slapping the cabinet!
Had I been put to reimagine how this cabinet could be reformatted, I would not be able to do it any justice, as it stands gloriously as currently is. However, since I am asked to do so in this blogpost, I could take a shot at it. As I played the game, I kept thinking that the button mashing was meant to emulate rowing on the boats, BUT! As I kept playing, I slowly noticed that the boats were not powered by rowing at all! They were simply gasoline propelled vehicles. It got me thinking about how this game could be a kayak racing game, and the mashing controls could be replaced by something more emulative of the action of rowing. I would love to see what the cabinet could look like if each player got a pair of handles that represented the ends of paddles, and if the action performed was quick spinning of these paddles instead of quick pressing of buttons. Perhaps it would easily break, or not be as chaotic, but it could also net some interesting results with players being forced to conduct a wider range of motion.
On another note, there were a few elements of the game that I could not experience fully due to the circumstances of the venue. There was a DJ set happening at the time, so none of the audio from the game came through. Also, the music was loud to the point that even hearing our own mash was difficult — which I imagine could be an integral part of the experience in the event that you’d want to keep track of how hard your opponents are mashing.
The setting did not solely detract from the experience though. Dare I say it most likely was one of the most essential parts of it! The chaos of a dimly lit bar with DJ sets, and a great amount of alcohol surmounted to an explosion of life from the players playing alongside me (myself included). We were careless, reckless, and free! The lights shone out of the cabinet and immersed us in its magic. Before we knew it, we could almost see the crowds of people cheering us on. Italy came to life as we were teleported back to 1988. Thank you Robysoft for that incredible moment.
Chinatown Fair - Pump it Up
Pump it Up is one of three dance rhythm games available to play at the Chinatown Fair. These games are controlled by one or two players stepping on different ‘buttons’/arrows on the dance platform. These correspond to arrows on the screen of the arcade cabinet. The timing is important and players must try step on the corresponding arrow at an exact time that is indicated visually, but also matches the beat of the song. They differ in the design/layout of the dance platform, hardware, visuals, available songs etc.
Pump it Up’s controller (dance platform) has five arrows, 4 diagonals pointing outwards, and 1 in the middle. The dance platform has a bar behind it that players can opt to hold onto, as an assist when moving very quickly. The platform is very steady and rigid - there is no way to move it around. The food pads are very sensitive (that is, one can get a response from tapping very gently) and they respond without any noticeable latency. The pads light up when you tap them as feedback.
The cabinet houses large speakers, above which sits the screen, surrounded by neon lights. The neon lights offer additional game feedback and add to the immersive experience created by the loud music, the embodied game-play and visual feedback on the screen. It feels very satisfying to stomp on an arrow at the correct time - the digital representation of the arrow lights up on screen, along with some text that will say something like ‘perfect!’ along with a score. Players must hit enough arrows correctly in order to keep their life-bar from draining and progressing to the next level.
Pump it Up feels great to play. The game is a little more lenient than some of the other variations (eg I found that Step Mania was more strict about timing), which is a nice touch because it allows newer players to be more adventurous. I found that I struggled to comfortably hold onto the bar while playing because my arms are fairly short; perhaps if I started playing the game regularly I would need to adapt my technique to not include the bar or see if i get used to the bar over time.
In terms of controller - there are many different types of controllers for music rhythm games e.g. ‘guitar’ controllers for guitar hero, VR motion controllers for Beat Saber etc. Blake has a game 'Scrapeboard’ that they often show at Wonderville that uses a skateboard (without wheels) to trigger the metal floor controller. What I really enjoy about foot controllers generally is how important physical movement becomes to master the game. There are always cooling fans stationed next to these games because players work up such a sweat while playing. Beat Saber, for example, is also fairly physical but because the controllers are handheld you can get away with standing very still. I wouldn’t want to change the foot controller much. I found that it was difficult to remember where the arrows were if I didn’t realize I’d moved off-center because I was never looking down. This is something that would just become easier with practice and I don’t think necessarily a design flaw. It might be interesting to have a controller like has more pads on more axes - eg if there were wall panels on the sides/behind/in front of the player that the player could use their hands and feet for. I’m not sure if anyone’s ever tried this!
