HVDC transmission projects gain traction in 800 kV REZ corridor tender
The rollout of HVDC transmission projects continues to accelerate with PGCIL’s latest tender for an 800 kV bipole line connecting Barmer-II to South Kalamb. This package forms a key part of a 6 GW renewable evacuation backbone under Rajasthan REZ phase IV.
Within Renewable evacuation corridors India, such projects are designed to handle high-capacity power flows with lower transmission losses. The hexa lapwing tower configuration reflects a focus on maximising capacity density within limited land corridors.
From an execution standpoint, these HVDC transmission projects involve engineering challenges including tower design, conductor stringing, and coordination with converter stations. However, the absence of detailed commercial and technical disclosures creates uncertainty around risk allocation.
Power Grid tenders for HVDC infrastructure typically favour established EPC players with proven track records. The short bid window further reinforces this trend, limiting competition to capable and prepared bidders.As HVDC transmission projects expand, they are expected to define the backbone of India’s renewable grid.
