Flyer promoting the series of spring 1996 Orgies from Record Hospital DJs at Harvard radio station WHRB.
I was reminded of these Orgies this past week via our cranky-old-former Record Hospital DJs forum, where someone posted a full-color poster featuring the Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, Red Krayola and Gravity Records Orgies.
The real one of interest to me on this two-sided flyer, though, was the Slampt Orgy. A label that had started just four years prior to being examined here, Slampt had already made a big impression on myself and a number of other Record Hospital DJs. Bands like Avocado Baby, Pussycat Trash and Milky Wimpshake made regular appearances in my show playlists.

I saw my first Hüsker Dü show at an Oddfellows Hall in South Minneapolis. It was 1982, and I had recently bought the band's live album Land Speed
Great little doc on Husker Du.
And in case you haven’t heard the historical monolith that is the early years box set on Numero Group from a couple years ago, Savage Young Du, here it is.
Listening to Husker Du, Part 1
We were listening to Husker Du
Penelope and I
when the cocaine hit
It was “New Day Rising,” I think
Great fucking album
Or maybe it was “Zen Arcade”
My memory’s a bit shaky
but the blow hit my heart
just as Bob sang “I apologize”
and I jumped from the couch
grabbing Penelope’s hand
to pull her up from the floor
We danced and danced
smashing into the furniture
spraying rice from our Chinese food
all over the TV and walls
She made me hot, Penelope did
with her cut off jeans
and wild, Ozzie Osbourne hair
So I ripped off my pants
to get the fucking started
but Penelope just laughed and pointed
at the little, shriveled worm
between my legs
I’d thought I was ready to go
I was ready in my head
but my body knew otherwise
It was then that the heroin struck
Big, like a tidal wave
rolling in from Australia
or some other planet I’d never seen
And it was massive
Way too much dope
I should have measured it better
I had to sit my ass down
while Penelope kept dancing
pumping her fist
in time to the music
I felt my eyes closing
Too fast, too fast
I reached my hand out
to grab her by the ankle
and I forced the word “help”
from my lips
Penelope kicked my hand away
as she danced across the room and said,
“Find help somewhere else, junkie
I’m listening to Husker Du.”
