"C'mon, Mac. We haven't seen a trick-or-treater in like an hour. Let's go!" Bozer pulled the front door of his house open and looked up and down the dark and silent street. Then, he spun back around and held his hands out. "See!"
Mac was much less enthused. "We promised your mom that we'd hand out candy until 8, and it's only 7:30. And we saw that kid dressed as Harry Potter twenty minutes ago."
Bozer's dad, Milton, was working at the police station, and his mom, Lauretta, had gone to a party at their Auntie Pamela's house. Since Bozer and Mac insisted that they weren't going trick-or-treating because they were too old for that kind of thing, she'd left them in charge of candy distribution, making sure they understood that she was trusting them with a very important job.
Mac, who hated Halloween anyway, took it very seriously. Bozer just wanted to go to Tim Chen's party even though they weren't invited.
"There are no more kids in this entire town. We've seen them all. Now go put on your costume so we can go." Bozer dropped to his knees and clasped his hands together while he begged, "Please. It's getting late."
