Hump Back - 「オーマイラブ /ōmairabu 」 vö 26.03.2025

Hump Back are 林萌々子(Vo, Gt) ぴか(Ba, Cho) 美咲(Dr, Cho)
So I’m Gonna preface this with saying that I have been studying Japanese for well over a decade and have nothing to show for it so my translation skills suck, and I probably got this wrong.
But one of my favorite songs by my favorite band, Hump Back, is 拝啓、少年よ, which roughly speaking is “To whom it may concern, I’m young!”
And the end of the first stanza, it says
バカみたいに、空がきれいだぜ。
Roughly, “like an idiot, the sky is beautiful!”
Which reminds me of this passage from parable of the sower by Octavia Butler:
“I stared down the hill from our camp where just a glint of water was visible in the distance through the trees and bushes. The world is full of painful stories. Sometimes it seems as though there aren’t any other kind and yet I found myself thinking how beautiful that glint of water was through the trees.”
And it really changed my brain a little. The world seems dire (and definitely is dire, free Palestine and Sudan and the Congo and any others that my sheltered white American worldview may be under informed about) and it often is an onslaught of sad story after sad story after tragedy after economic collapse after climate disaster after genocide.
But like an idiot, the sky is beautiful.
Like an idiot, the waters still shine in the sun through the trees.
It doesn’t matter how much it sucks right now, because worst case: the sky is beautiful.
And last year, when Canada was on fire and it was dangerous to go outside under the orange smoke cloud that replaced the sky? I was on an airplane flying to and from Texas. The sky was still beautiful. We just couldn’t see it for a second.
Idk I’m rambling now but to quote another part of the song:
あっ、もう泣かないで!
君が思うほどに弱くはない。
Ah, don’t cry anymore. It’s not as hopeless as you think.
