However, the human "objects" purchased must be respected regarding their physical and/or psychological integrity. Their free and informed consent is a mandatory condition for any purchase to be legal; this consent is even stipulated on every bill of sale.

I was thirteen and a half, and it happened a few weeks after Max made the payment. We met at a notary’s office—Max, my family, and I. The notary said: "We are gathered here to finalize and authenticate the deed of purchase for Lola by Mr. Max, following the payment made to François—Lola’s father and husband."

Act 1: The woman known as Lola is now an object and no longer has any legal existence. Act 2: The woman known as Lola loses the right to be addressed by her first name; from now on, she will be called whatever her owner desires—be it a human name, the name of another animal species, or any other designation that pleases him. Under this Act, she will henceforth be called "the Thing."

Act 3: The Thing may be transferred—with or without payment—or leased.

Act 4: The Thing may sleep with her husbands as she wishes, subject to the schedule determined for her. If the sellers and the purchaser of the Thing initial every page and sign the final page, the purchase agreement for the Thing becomes final.

Before recording Act 5, the notary asked me: "Lola, do you freely consent—fully understanding the implications—to become an object belonging to Max, to become his property?" "Yes, I do."

Act 5: Lola—or rather, the object—freely and knowingly consents to become Max's property.
