Ok but what about the Paladinsā microbiome?
Iād be really curious to hear what others have to say about this because Iām trying to think about realistically what would happen to the paladinsā symbiotic bacteria when they went to space? And also the bacteria and viruses that cause illnesses. Like wouldnāt the only Earth sicknesses the paladins could possibly get be whatever they already had in their systems when they went to space? And then what about their microbiome? Like all the beneficial microorganisms that live on a humanās skin/digestive tract/etc? Iām assuming there are no probiotic yogurts in space... And if the decontamination unit kills off a lot of the surface microbes on their skin how do they regenerate that microbiome? Those organisms are pretty important for keeping a human body functioning smoothly, and on Earth your community will be maintained and supplemented from the environment, but thatās impossible in space. Do they regenerate a new microbiome with space microbes? Do they keep Earth microbes in culture so they always have some on hand?
Iāve taken some basic microbiology and immunology courses, but Iād really be curious to hear what someone more knowledgeable in the field would have to say about what happens to a humanās microbiome during a prolonged stay in space.Ā

Microbes evolved to colonize different parts of the human body
As the human species evolved over the last six million years, our resident microbes did the same, adapting to vastly different conditions on our skin and in our mouths, noses, genitalia and guts.
A team of Duke University scientists has tracked how this microbial evolution unfolded, using mathematical tools originally developed for geologists.
The scientists identified microbes that diverged into new species as they colonized one area of the body after another. Their study provides a new way of looking at complicated microbial data to tease out the evolution of bacteria associated with our bodies.
The research, published in the open access journal eLife, could prompt new theories and treatments for managing these bacterial communities, collectively known as the human microbiome, to improve our personal health.
