For the immune system, this is only partly true. Older people do get sick more often, for example, respiratory infections, and suffer it harder than the young, but not at all because their immune cells and organs do not work. The animal's immune system is busy answering the question of who I am? Its main function is to distinguish one's own from another, and to destroy this alien. The task is not easy, especially considering that there are hundreds of cell types in the human body, filled with tens of thousands of molecules, and hundreds of parasites can attack it. The easiest way to recognize an enemy is to make a picture of its kind that it can possess. At the molecular level, this is also possible: our parasites are evolutionarily very far away and there are many structures in their bodies that are not found in us. On human immune cells there are receptors of a kind of orientation towards them: if the receptor recognizes PAMP, then a parasite has entered the body and it can be shot at damage. Sometimes there are receptors for pathogenicity on normal, non-immune cells of the body. This is necessary, for example, to feel the virus that has penetrated inside the cell and give a distress signal. But mostly pathogenic patrols are carried by innate immune cell professionals. These are macrophages, which specialize in eating the enemy by phagocytosis, and granulocytes, which water the enemy with toxic substances, paralytic poisons and free radicals. As soon as a cell of innate immunity feels the presence of an enemy, it not only prepares for an attack, but also signals its colleagues to the danger, highlighting anti-inflammatory proteins. They act on the surrounding immune cells, forcing them to move more actively and produce more toxins. The combination of these hostilities is called inflammation. In addition to hunting for strangers, immune cells often earn extra money by rescuers, breaking down debris in damaged tissues and digesting, with the help of phagocytosis, fragments of extracellular molecules and remains of cell bodies. But in order to react in time to an emergency in this or that organ, they need to recognize the signals of their own cells in distress. Such signals are stressor molecules, or alarm, or DAMP (danger-associated molecular patterns), substances that normally do not leave the cells and are not in the blood, such as DNA and its associated proteins, mitochondrial molecules or ATP, the energy basis of any cells The set of orientations in innate immunity is small and is able to recognize only a limited number of molecules. From this point of view, it is very convenient that many alarm-mines are similar in structure to pathogenicity patterns. For example, fats from the inner mitochondrial membrane are somewhat similar to fats from bacterial membranes, and this is not surprising, because mitochondria is a former bacterium. Therefore, immune cells develop the same inflammation, regardless of whose corpse meets a wounded enemy or injured friend in their path. And this system is effective until the tissues begin to age and die almost everything.
