#circle of danger #1951 #jacques tourneur #ray milland #british cinema #thriller film #patricia roc #marius goring #hugh sinclair #naunton wayne #edward rigby #marjorie fielding #john bailey #colin gordon #dora bryan #reginald beckwith #david hutcheson #archie duncan #nora gordon #george margo #philip macdonald #novel adaptation #i'm a real sucker for this kind of 'wartime mystery investigated after the fact' sort of film. all deep secrets and unpleasant truths in th #face of wartime camaraderie and stoicism. add in tourneur and milland and roc and surely you have something special. and this is certainly #good. well made well played and interesting. but for the most part it just doesn't quite hit that specialness i'd hoped for. the exception #is the final showdown on some scottish moors which is fantastically staged and shot. there's so much tension just in the way milland and #goring are stood (see image above) and the desolate background. that scene is pure brilliance. other things of note here: milland goes to #a working colliery in wales which is interesting but the welsh accents on display might be the worst i've ever heard (john bailey for shame #also goring is fantastic and his character is very much queer coded (with some attached negativity sadly) and hints of feelings for sinclai #in fact his character (a much decorated former commando turned choreographer and ballet producer) is by far the most interesting thing here

British Heroes: Lobby Card of 'The Saint Meets the Tiger' 1943. This is the 2nd and final appearance of Hugh Sinclair as the Saint. I like this film, a very cheap 'B' movie made in Britain but it does have a certain charm. The female role of 'Pat' played by Jean Gillie steals the show but, Hugh is funny, as he does play the role as the languid upper-upper ... middle-class Englishman, who drifts through the world effortlessly with that rather off-hand - "I'm-so-polite-but-ever-so-slightly-superior" attitude of the time, brilliantly.
