“It was a day from Hell.” Chloe corrected, practically collapsing into the chair at the dinner table. Her poor feet ached, amazed she taught as many lessons as she did that day. It was one thing to take on an extra class but she took on three with minimal breaks in between. The woman was in decent shape, yet by the time the last class started she was practically running on fumes. 

Caleb went about setting dinner in front of her and the girl looked up at him, with obvious affection and appreciation in her eyes. “Can you feed me? I don’t want to move.” There was a cute pout on her face as she attempted to sit up better but that was entirely too much effort. She’d need him to run her a bath after dinner and make sure she doesn’t fall asleep in the tub. 

If he were to have given up he wouldn’t be standing here right now making sure everything was perfect; from the Christmas lights down to the scented candles he had placed on each side of the lovely bouquet in the middle of the table. Rubbing his hands together, Caleb stood by the chair just admiring all the work he put in as he looked at the clock counting down the seconds until Chloe barged straight through the door. He told her that he wanted to talk tonight and it was an emergency, total cliche but hey it works like a charm whenever Chloe’s in a panic she rushes.

Staring at the door and clock, sweat was starting to form within places he never imagined he could sweat. This wasn’t cool at all. Caleb couldn’t be smelly right now when he was about to ask the most important question to the most important person in his life, other than his mother of course. Yes, Caleb was going to ask Chloe to marry him, he figured nine months was a good enough time to ask right? The door creaked open then it swung, Chloe stood there with her eyes widen and Caleb had the biggest grin on his face. “Hey beautiful.” The awkward giant began speaking as he walked over to grab Chloe’s things, placing them off to the side and escorted her to the dinner table. “Figured we could have a nice lovely dinner before we talk, you do deserve it after all.” He smiled and pulled out a chair for her to sit down before taking the seat across from her.

Her Rudolph did look way better than his Frosty, and now that Caleb had a far better look at it he was questioning what exactly was going through his mind at the time when he made this. “You know...it’s kinda giving me the creeps now that I think about it. And my mom hung this up every year and said she loved it. I am not sure if she was just being nice or if she was just too freaked out to tell me the truth.” A hand slipped to the back of his neck, rubbing it gently as he shrugged his shoulders. “Oh well. At least yours doesn’t make mine look that scary.” The boy chuckled and kissed her cheek, bending down and looking at more decorations. “Sometimes I miss the days when I was back in school, making projects like this. Times just seemed so much easier you know?”

The man came in greasy from head to toe, covered in car oil and God knows whatever else tonight and he was starving. Far more than usual as well. Eyes widen when Chloe came in, trying to avoid hugs because she obviously didn’t want any stains on her clean clothes. “You…wait…what was that?” Caleb was so hungry and exhausted that he couldn’t fully comprehend exactly what Chloe had just told him. He remembered calling her earlier to let her know he’d probably be running a little late a three day weekend was coming up so everyone was in and out of the shop today, getting their oil changes done and everything else for their weekend plans.

Chloe was on top of Caleb, their lips connected while they came down from their post-sex high. The girl could feel his arms wrapped tight around her small frame and there was such a sense of love that came from what happened that all she could do was smile against his lips. 

When Chloe pulled her mouth away, little kisses dotted her boyfriend’s lips unable to control herself; she heard him ask about marriage. At first she thought her mind played tricks and he didn’t say anything. That was until she looked down at him and recognized the serious expression on his face; the one he wore whenever he waited for her answer to something. 

“Are you proposing to me, Caleb?”

Chloe looked down at Caleb, his cheek against her chest; arm snaked around her body so he held her tight. They were in their new apartment, mattress on the floor, yet this felt so relaxed. Sure, she wanted to unpack and get everything put together to make it feel like a real home but this was nice. The girl’s hand went through his hair, dragging fingers through it before pressing a stray kiss. “Good. I don’t plan on moving anytime soon.”

Chloe held the paintbrush in a small hand. It was clear where her height kept the girl from painting past a certain point; while Caleb easily reached the crown molding. 

Her eyes glowered at him, the brush with the khaki-colored paint moved dangerously close to the spotless white shirt he wore for this job. “I’m not small. You’re freakishly tall!” She pouted a moment before she decided to run the brush down the front of his shirt. “And it looks like you’re a very messy painter, too.” Chloe dropped the brush onto the tarp. “Have fun painting the rest of the room on your own, babe.” 

Was she overreacting? Probably. But she hated whenever anybody made fun of her size.
