Hellooo Httyd fans. Today I want to talk about him, the one who had potential, the one we as fand only saw as nonsense, the one who claims to be smart because the script said so!
YESSS! I SPEAK TO YOU ABOUT....!!!!
Grimmel. Yes. Grimmel the Grisly:
He is the worst possible villain, we agree. He just appeared out of nowhere, and they said he was evil because he, HE, is responsible for the extinction of the Night Furies. I don't know about you guys, but this whole "Everybody Hates Toothless" thing is kind of...repetitive? In a way???
But oh well, going back! I think if they wanted Grimmel to be such a feared character, why didn't they make him a hunter who hunted thousands of dragon species, not just Night Furies? There are thousands of races in Httyd that are more powerful than Toothless. I imagine Grimmel as the guy who has a collection of Skrill's head bones, which he sees not as a trophy but as an achievement, and captured Boneknappers with a lure trap using the very same Skrill's bones (Because he knows the Boneknapper can't resist finding the perfect bone for their armor. And he could have used the same tactic with iron to capture Armorwings!) used the Flightmare's mist to freeze his victims before they escaped, Eventually, as he grew more skilled and deadlier to dragons, he took down a Bewilderbeast. Once he finally took down a Bewilderbeast, Grimmel got it into his head that any dragon could be tamed with fear and the promise of death, and they can easily be taken advantage of in this regard. I see Grimmel as a guy who studied dragons to learn their weaknesses in order to stab them in the back and as he learned more and more, he even learned how to take down the biggest dragons using theories and his own mind.
Dreamworks said Grimmel is the person Hiccup could have become if he had killed Toothless. But they did a terrible job when they only focused on the protagonist's dragon. For me, Grimmel should have been a guy who hunted dangerous dragons, even those that nobody else valued, and why? I imagine Grimmel using a Gronckle's skin as a shield, monstrous nightmare gel and a spark to start a fire (like Hiccup with Inferno!) They could have even shown a scene where the Warlords enter his lair seeking help, knowing that by mentioning a Night Fury (Toothless) Grimmel would gain interest, but of course with something in return besides Toothless: all the other dragons. The Warlords start snooping through Grimmel's things, and one of them picks up an object, and Grimmel says without looking, "That is Monstrous Nightmare gel...and that is the spine of a Scauldron...and that is a Shellfire's broken horn...and that is Flightmare mist." (As soon as he says Flightmare mist, whoever picked up the thing falls hard to the ground, and Grimmel sighs through his nose.) By the way, did you all know that in his concept art he was supposed to have a flaming axe?!
Another thing is that some people thought it was kind of silly that he hated dragons just for that reason, and I imagined him as a little boy who had been raised in a village that, duh, hated dragons because they stole their food and attacked their homes (Httyd 1 problem, you know, with the Red Death commanding dragons to get her food and rarh) Grimmel is very much like young Hiccup; he couldn't kill dragons because he was weak and stuff, and then one day Grimmel manages to kill a dragon, which could have been a Night Fury or a Monstrous Nightmare. Grimmel, as a child, became determined to study dragons and use that knowledge to his advantage, to hearn their trust, and then pull out a knife and stab them in the throat.
So my final words are!Grimmel The Grisly had every potential to be a scary and genuinely good villain! But he wasn't...
