A Critique Of The Live Action Gronkle Design
So I don't care too much for the Live Action Film's Gronkle design, and I feel like it's under designed. So it feels like they tried way to hard to make the Gronkle look realistic to the point it looks less realistic.
The first problem I have it they lack of it's iconic tusks or sharp teeth. So the sharp teeth may not seem like an important part of their design, but it's one of their more prominent features. The tusk-like teeth have been part of the Gronkle's design since the books. See the page 24 or the back of How To Train Your Dragon Book 1, and page 31 of How To Train Your Dragon The Complete Book Of Dragons A Guide To Dragon Species. Both mention their razor-sharp teeth, which The Book Of Dragons Guide mentions they use for fighting. I'd also note the Gronkle while different didn't have it's design changed too much from book to film. Anyways...
Now the the thing is animals having such razor sharp teeth or tusks is something we see all the time in the real world, so a fictional dragon can have them too. They could have even had them covered up by skin only revealing them when their mouth opened. Also, an extra thing to not is the Gronkle from How To Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular did indeed retain it's sharp tusk-like teeth, so they definitely could have done the same for the Live Action Film.
The next bit is I felt like the wart-like bumps covering the Gronkle could have been more obvious. It is something that stand out on the original film's design, and again HTTYD Live was not afraid to do this. It's also not like animals doesn't have such features, just look at the various types of osteoderms living and extinct reptiles can have.
The replaced the Gronkle's ear-like frills bits with spikes which I feel was unnecessary, as again such features can show up on real life reptiles alongside other almost decorative bits. Also, again HTTYD Live kept the little ear-like frills.
One final bit is I feel like the Gronkle felt too gray and more like an elephant in color. I bring this up because many Gronkles in particular Meatlug have more of a brownish green color. Yes a bit of a nitpick, but the design just feels a bit too drab. Written by Eris
