Hereâs what Mitchell had to say about working on the soundtrack with Stewart:
This film began as a short story gleam in the eye of Neil Gaiman which was then refracted through Philippa Goslettâs adaptation. She saw our hero Enn as a young Neil-like punk comic book artist from much-mocked suburban Croydon. Naturally the film includes 70âs classics: the first UK punk single âNew Roseâ by The Damned (Captain Sensible & Rat Scabies did time in Croydon); Lou Reedâs âI Found a Reasonâ (thank you Hal Willner and Laurie Anderson!), âNursery Chymesâ by the great Bruno Wizard of The Homosexuals (who cameos as our club MC). But DIY being both our medium and our message, this album favors the new stuff and we had didnât have room for period gems like Brunoâs âSoft South Africansâ or Dub Specialistâs âStarring Dubâ. The punk side of things is anchored by our fictional band Dyschords, created by Bryan Weller and singer Martin Tomlinson (bless you Danny Fields for those YouTubes videos of Martinâs band Selfish Cunt). Kudos to Dyschords producer/mixer Rory Attwell. AC Newman contributed the instant classics âFuck Allâ and âAngry Universeâ (inspired by a line from the short story) while Ezra Furman delivered the creamy âRainy Lifeâ. Along with Justin Craig and Tits of Clay (the Broadway Hedwig band), I formed The Dyslexic Cnuts (which lasted for a day⊠so punk) to record the song âExtractionâ with cabaret legend Amber Martin who offers the melt-in-your-mouth âBermudaâ (and who also voices the soul singer in Mumâs kitchen scene). The vast and deep alien soundscape was conjured by sonic sorcerers Matmos (who also give us the faux krautrock âFleckenâ, or âCum Stainâ in German). Maestro Nico Muhly provided alien choral textures and a glorious Exit Requiem for our departing aliens (or was it a Brexit Requiem?). Xiu Xiuâs Jamie Stewart and I spawned the trans-species alien-punk âEat Me Aliveâ, performed live by Alex Sharp and Elle Fanning, as well as our space-dance credit song âBetween the Breathsâ voiced by indie goddess Mitski. Bless you Michael Hill for shepherding our musical flock. I urge the reader to make things with her/his/their mates. As with us, a wonderful time will be had by all.
I made a poster with the nice people at Mondo for A24's latest film, HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES. Adapted from a short story by Neil Gaiman and directed by John Cameron Mitchell, the story is set in 1970s London and follows Enn and his friends, John and Vic, as they find themselves at a "party" that is actually a gathering of visiting aliens. The film is a ton of fun and features stellar performances, particularly from Elle Fanning and Nicole Kidman as a basement-punk "low" priestess. Iâm crazy excited to partner up with Mondo for duties on this poster. My brother and I worked on the Graphic Novel adaptation of the short story and I wanted to connect the book and the movie as soon as I knew there was going to be a movie. Be sure to check out the film in theaters this weekend!
"There's something about the connection of the main characters (who are a couple) that's very intimate, very quiet, and at the same time transmits the explosive effect of falling in love. I wanted to put that sense of intimacy in the poster as well as capture the energetic punk aesthetics of the film."Â - FĂĄbio Moon
