ok so i headcannon that since maine used to be a part of mass, once it started being more independent, maine came along. but he was a baby- so mads has this little brother maine that he has to raise and once maine becomes its own separate entity, thats when maine is the equivalent of a young adult.
SO since the rest if new england and the surrounding colonies/states were already separate entities beforehand, id like to think that they all loved hanging out with baby maine.
and ny became like a second guardian to him too :3 like when things didnt go his way snd mass was being a responsible older brother- maine would run to ny to get him to change mass’ mind or to just undermine him all together
