The rules for literary food prompts aren’t perfect, but in general: 1) Anything humans eat in the course of the book goes on the list, non-humans case by case. 2) Duplicate meals are not required to be made twice. 3) Reasonable substitutions are allowed insofar as I don’t actually have access to all the same foods as my favorite characters!

The feasts were the most fun for this set - they worked as meal prep and were delightful to spread out. Like many Harry Potter fans, I found engaging with this very bittersweet. I grew up with a lot of positive influence to my life from these books, and didn't believe at first that such nastiness of thought could sprout from the same seeds. I remember reading when I was eleven that the choice to put so much food in these books was deliberate, and from that day on I always wanted to try it all.

I have not decided if I will continue on with the other books in future, but any merchandise or branded material will only be things I already own. Thanks for coming with me on this journey.

After a meal of turkey sandwiches, crumpets, trifle, and Christmas cake, everyone felt too full and sleepy to do much before bed except sit and watch Percy chase Fred and George all over Gryffindor tower because they’d stolen his prefect badge.

It had been Harry’s best Christmas day ever. Yet something had been nagging at the back of his mind all day. Not until he climbed into bed was he free to think about it: the invisibility cloak and whoever had sent it.

Ron, full of turkey and cake and with nothing mysterious to bother him, fell asleep almost as soon as he’d drawn the curtains of his four-poster.

Also a lot of fun, though we had more dessert than food and not enough marzipan to cover the cake. Interestingly the flavor profile for the cake is very similar to the pudding of the other day but they came out more different than I would have expected.

I put lettuce, mayo, mustard, and onion on my turkey sandwiches. First time making crumpets so burned them just a tad but the recipe is here. Adapted the trifle recipe a touch, but that one can be found here, and the cake recipe here.

Happy “Christmas” all!

Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce - and stacks of wizard crackers every few feet along the table...

Flaming Christmas puddings followed the turkey. Percy nearly broke his teeth on a silver Sickle embedded in his slice. Harry watched Hagrid getting redder and redder in the face as he called for more wine, finally kissing Professor McGonagall on the cheek, who, to Harry’s amazement, giggled and blushed, her top hat lopsided.

We enjoyed this so much! Of course we scaled down to just be us - only ONE fat roast turkey... I also was not able to get chipolatas so I substituted other sausages and hid them in the back.

My parents contributed the cranberry sauce, and this is the Christmas pudding recipe.

I still hold that large fantasy feasts, even simple ones, are great meal prep. Just freeze what you don’t use!

"This is Ron," Harry told Hagrid, who was pouring boiling water into a large teapot and putting rock cakes onto a plate.

"Another Weasley, eh?" said Hagrid, glancing at Ron's freckles. "I spent half me life chasin' your twin brothers away from the forest."

The rock cakes were shapeless lumps with raisins that almost broke their teeth, but Harry and Ron pretended to be enjoying them as they told Hagrid all about their first lessons.

Visually these turned out well - I did not actually try to make them hard enough to break my teeth. Kudos to this recipe!

Friday was an important day for Harry and Ron. They finally managed to find their way down to the Great Hall for breakfast without getting lost once.

"What have we got today?" Harry asked Ron as he poured sugar on his porridge.

"Double Potions with the Slytherins," said Ron. "Snape's head of Slytherin House. They say he always favors them - we'll be able to see if it's true."

He had never had any money for candy with the Dursleys, and now that he had pockets rattling with gold and silver he was ready to buy as many Mars Bars as he could carry - but the woman didn't have Mars Bars. What she did have were Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, Drooble's Best Blowing Gum, Chocolate Frogs, Pumpkin Pasties, Cauldron Cakes, Licorice Wands, and a number of other strange things Harry had never seen in his life. Not wanting to miss anything, he got some of everything and paid the woman eleven silver Sickles and seven bronze Knuts.

Ron stared as Harry brought it all back in to the compartment and tipped it onto an empty seat.

"Hungry, are you?"

"Starving," said Harry, taking a large bite out of a pumpkin pasty.

Ron had taken out a lumpy package and unwrapped it. There were four sandwiches inside. He pulled one of them apart and said, "She always forgets I don't like corned beef."

"Swap you for one of these," said Harry, holding up a pasty. "Go on-"

"You don't want this, it's all dry," said Ron. "She hasn't got much time," he added quickly, "you know, with five of us."

"Go on, have a pasty," said Harry, who had never had anything to share before or, indeed, anyone to share it with. It was a nice feeling, sitting there with Ron, eating their way through all Harry's pasties, cakes, and candies (the sandwiches lay forgotten).

This was probably the most fun I’ve had doing this. It was GREAT and way too much sugar.

Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans have been replaced by Jelly Belly (very similar) and some of the energy jelly beans they gave us as a sample? I love Jelly Belly~

Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum was my first attempt at making gum from a kit. I didn’t 100% follow the directions correctly and made the pieces WAY too big. They were flavored with lemon and raspberry, and colored a bright blue with shimmer dust.

Chocolate frogs - just melted chocolate and added it to frog candy molds. They came out very smoothly.

Pumpkin Pasties and Cauldron Cakes were taken from the Geeky Chef Cookbook. I could eat the Pumpkin Pasties all day but the Cauldron Cakes were a little much for me personally.

To round it out, I made multicolored meringues, pumpkin cookies (literally just spice cake mix and pumpkin puree), Poffins with raspberry filling (SO GOOD, again from the Geeky Chef Cookbook), and chocolate samosas from the Rasika cookbook. I then added maple candies, Jelly Slugs, rock candy wands, chocolate bars, and that fun candy that changes the flavors of everything you taste!

“You’ve got to eat some breakfast.” “I don’t want anything.” “Just a bit of toast,” wheedled Hermione. “I’m not hungry.”

Harry felt terrible. In an hour’s time he’d be walking onto the field.

“Harry, you need your strength,” said Seamus Finnigan. “Seekers are always the ones who get clobbered by the other team.” 

“Thanks, Seamus,” said Harry, watching Seamus pile ketchup on his sausages.

I’m definitely more into fancy mustard being on my sausages, but not my call in this case.

"You're joking."

It was dinnertime. Harry had just finished telling Ron what had happened when he'd left the grounds with Professor McGonagall. Ron had a piece of steak and kidney pie halfway to his mouth, but he'd forgotten all about it.

"Seeker?" he said. "But first years never - you must be the youngest house player in about-"

"-a century," said Harry, shoveling pie into his mouth. He felt particularly hungry after the excitement of the afternoon. "Wood told me."

I tried to get kidney for a long time for this, but the pandemic defeated me on that point locally. I kept having stores say it was in stock when it wasn’t. Altered this recipe a bit and added more steak and mushrooms.
