“Useful Tips or Techniques on How I Pass the Civil Service Exam”

When I was searching during days before I will take the exam, I was fund of reading comments or messages in the internet about, of course, tips on how to pass the Civil Service Exam.

So, here, I would like to share my experience in October 2016, Civil Service Exam - Professional Level.

But remember, my tips and techniques can be or can’t be accurate. It will still depend on your preparation and luck.

So let’s start..

1. SEARCH. (Get ready)

So at first, I was curious on what type of exam will I encounter.

The first thing I did was to search. Make use of the social media or internet (google or yahoo), books (reviewer/s) and/or people, where you can get much information and answers to questions in mind you do not know.

In my case, for the first step, I only rely on the internet. I would type some things like: *Tips on how to pass civil service exam *How to pass civil service exam in one take *What are the coverage of civil service exam and so on…

And believe me, there are many sites that you can read to have an overview into everything that you would want to know about.

2. STUDY. (Read, Search, Be Resourseful)

For the second step, I studied.

For people who doesn’t want to study, of course, you can pass the Civil Service Exam without studying, but it is a 50/50 chance and risk. It is still good to refresh your mind and add as much knowledge as possible.

Since, I want to pass my Civil Service Exam in one take,my go to website for studying is 1taker.com. They have good sample questions which I have tried and I answered them all, they have answer keys too so you can check if you answered right or wrong.

*Of course, some of their sample questions is not up to date, especially when in terms of philippine government questions, so your job is to make that old question a format to search for the current answer that maybe has changed overtime.*

Then when I have wrong answers, I try to understand on how I came up with that wrong answer and analyze how to came up with the correct answer next time.

There are reviewer/s or book/s in which you have to spend extra money to study. But in my case, I didn’t spend a single peso, I just read and search topics in the internet (anything about the philippine government, politics, current news, etc), sometimes I watch youtube videos for answering simple math problems (you should exercise answering math problems without calculator), ask questions to my family and friends, and I read and scan books and reviewers that my classmates have.

3. BE PREPARED. (Know your strengths and weakness)

This step will be helpful for you to achieve Step 4 later on.

In my case, when I was evaluating myself, I kind of have difficulties in reading comprehensions, logic, answering math problems without the use of calculator, and I lack knowledge in terms of philippine government and politics.

So what I did is to practice, read and watch as many articles and videos as possible. And trust me, it is also helpful that you communicate with your family and friends to practice and test what you have already learned, try to give them trivias in some articles that you have read so that it can retain in your memory.

I know that my strengths is grammar, english and filipino, and a little bit in clerical. So I take less time for the things that I am confident about.

The best tip is to read, write, practice and communicate. Especially if you are not that good in English, it’s time for you to read and practice english as much as possible, because most of the questions is in English (at kakaunti lamang ang nakasulat sa Tagalog/Filipino).

4. HAVE A TECHNIQUE. (Useful Tip 101)

Examination day will come and you should prepare your heart and mind for the battle you will face.

The examination is a half day so I don’t wanna waste every single minute and hour, for every second counts.

It is a 100+ questions. We are the first batch to use ballpen in the Civil Service Exam’s Pen and Paper Test. I would suggest that you should carry 2 black ballpen and 2 pencils with you when you take the exam, so that if any of which will be used, then you are prepared.

Of course, the technique really depends on you and your knowledge (as you have evaluated yourself in Step 3). But my technique is that:

a.) I answered first all questions in English and Filipino (Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Logic, Philippine Government/Constitution, etc.). I recommend to answer all English and Filipino questions first, since majority of the test revolves around it. You don’t wanna waste your time solving math problems over the many English and Filipino questions that may take you forever to read, but has easy answers.

Since you have such a little time to spend on the exam, make use of “wild guesses”, especially in terms of vocabulary and/or reading comphrehension that almost all choices seems to be the best answer, so that you don’t have much questions to skip.

b.) I recommend that you answer the math problem/s the last, which i did, since it will consume you more time to write and solve (especially, if you are not math wizard).

Estimate to allot an hour for you to answer as many math questions that you know how to solve. Solve first all the things you know, rather than taking too much time on problems you cannot solve. Remember that there’s time pressure at stake, so you wouldn’t want to miss something you know just because you focused on a question you do not know.

c.) Pray before and after the exam.

What I mean is that, don’t take too much time praying or reflecting in the middle of your exam proper. It will consume you time. Sure it will help for some, but in my opinion, just try to pray before and after so that you can focus more on the exam.

5. WAIT. (Bear the fruits of your labor.)

Pray. Be happy and move on.

Wait for the result with high hopes but with least expections.
