My university has the queer collective which runs the queer safe room. An assignment I'm doing right now is literally on queer space in modernist architecture (which is really interesting).
What would happen if someone who tried to stop others using the word went to my uni? Would they pick a fight with every single member of the queer collective? Discourse like this doesn't work in a real life setting.
I know it has a history of being used against us, but it's also just the word for the lgbtqia+ community in an academic setting (seriously no-one uses the word homosexual, every paper I see says queer)
