The Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces PR division finally released photos and video of the winning rifle design, from Howa, that will replace the Howa Type-89. While we already had a pretty good idea about the H&K SFP9 handgun, we didn’t know much of anything about the new Howa prototype rifle that was running against the several established platforms from SIG, H&K, FN-Herstal, and others. It was simply known as the Howa-5.56.
Early this morning, they showed off as the Howa Type-20. According to Sankei.com, the JGSDF reported that the Type-20 will be 78cm (30.7-inches) in length and will weigh 3.5kg (7.7-lbs) but isn’t specific on if that’s loaded or unloaded.
