Every Small Thing
*A short story for you, bud!*
*Here we go!*
(Kid’s name is Paprika. Horror x Dust)
Three weeks home, and Horror still couldn’t look at her without feeling sorry. He should be proud that Dust and he had a kid, and happy that it looked… better than them both. She had a good skull until his shaking hands dropped her in front of the doctor. After that, he couldn’t hold her. She was so small in his hands, and she was peaceful when she slept at night. The thing never had a bad thing happened to her before, and she would never have that. Never. Horror would bend backwards for that promise, but he’ll keep himself away from her until she’s older.
“Hey, hon?” Dust called at the door. Horror snapped out of his thoughts of dropping her towards Dust. “I’m going out for a while. Please check on Paprika? I’ll try to come back with food for her.”
Horror nodded carefully at Dust. “I can do that.”
Dust moved over and kissed his cracked skull. Why he loves him was the real question. “It’ll be alright, Horror,” Dust’s voice hummed. “She’s a good girl.”
As he left, Horror grasped his hand, saying, “Please don’t be long?” Dust nodded at him and left into the cold air.
The snow was a fresh coat from last night’s snow storm. The winds howled and slammed against the house, shaking the walls and windows. The T.V. was out along with the power. In the middle of the living room, a fire was burning along with candles around the house. Dust was sleeping on Horror’s shoulder while Paprika slept on the couch soundlessly. She was quiet for a baby bones, and she was observant around her. The big bow around her neck and her matching pink eyes, it could have melted the whole underground with one look.
She was always interested in her parents. When Dust would watch her, she play with his fingers and toes, giggling at the bones that look like hers. She would tug on his jacket and try to climb up, trying to stand, but would fall on her bottom on the floor. She would look down at the ground and at her father, clapping her hands, giggling happily, and tired again. Dust would help her to stand up. She was learning about the world around her, and he loved that. She almost reminded him of Papyrus when he was little… before the genocide. She would squeal in delight and through her arms open to her father for a hug or to show him her pink, fluffy bunny. Her smile was bright, and he sworn her smile was the actual sun in this forsaken hell hole.
For Horror, however, he kept his space from her, but she didn’t understand why and she didn’t care why. She would crawl towards him on the floor or the sofa and would reach for his hands. They were huge compared to her size, and she found that out when she held on up and rest her hand against his. Paprika made a wondering noise as she looked up at her papa, but she smiled brightly when she saw the familiar red color like her blanket. Her arms would stretch for a hug, but he would pat her head and call for her father, leaving her. Her arms would fall to her side slowly and hurt, but she didn’t cry; she only made a whimper as she was taken away from her papa.
It hurts Horror to treat her like this, and it hurts like hell when she gives her those sad puppy eyes. Papyrus, before the Hunger, had the same eyes when he forgot to read him a bedtime story. He would feel his SOUL crack in half every time, and it would make him rethink his chose. He would be reminded with the crack on her skull by her right eye as she smiled up at him, that’s why he doesn’t like to be left alone with her when Dust was gone and Papyrus was out with Undyne. He felt responsible again for her hunger and for the world she lives in now. No food some nights, and no heat to keep her warm besides blankets and scarves, but she never cried about it. She would cry, yes, but she would cry form nightmares or she kept failing at the same task. Horror knew she’ll be a strong bone-headed skeleton like him, and she’ll have questions and dreams like Dust.
Horror sat quietly in the living room as a low fire rolled in snaps and flickers. He’ll have to go out soon for wood and, if Dust doesn’t find food, he’ll have to hunt. What do babies even eat?—
A wail came from upstairs that made him jump out of his skin.
“Skin,” he whispered loud to himself. “That’s a good one.” He slow moved off the couch as she cried again. The stairs creaked as he climbed up, feeling the cold railing against the wall. He was sweating bullets when he opened the door to her room, his right eye glowing to light the room up. She must have had a nightmare. He huffed to himself, shoving his hands in his pockets, and sluggishly walked towards her. Her arms were in the air as her feet tried to kick the blankets off her. Shaking, his hand reached down and smoothed her skull. “It’s okay, pumpkin,” he hushed. “Papa’s here, kiddo.”
Her hand touched his as her cries began to soften. Her eyes open and looked wobbly under the water as she made whimpers in her throat. She sniffed her little nose as tears began to slow. “Had a nightmare, huh?” He asked softly, careful not to scare her. “Don’t worry, pumpkin, Papa gets them, too.” Her small arms reached up to him, her teeth shaking.
With his other hand shaking, he carefully lifted her small body to his chest, patting her back lightly. She was so tiny in his hands, and he was scared of holding her too tightly without the thought of crushing. He backed up and sat down in the broken chair, which was missing the back but the legs still worked. He began hushing her softly as she would whimper and shake.
“Oh, pumpkin, you’re okay.” He sat her on his lap and held her up. She was looking up at him, sniffling. “Nightmares aren’t real. If they were, I make sure they wouldn’t hurt you. Monsters throw rocks at things that shine, and you shine the brightest.” He smoothed his thumb on her cheek to wipe a tear away.
Her hand grasped his thumb and held it. Horror felt his cheeks brighten and flourished in red. She wasn’t crying anymore, and she was observing her papa. Her tiny hands touched his boney arms and she tried to stand up on his lap. Horror helped and up, and her hands traveled up his neck and touched his face. Her eyes brighten as she giggled at the broken skull, but she stop when her hands touched one of the edges. Paprika made noises that Horror couldn’t understand as her fingers traced the edges and cracks. “I’m okay, pumpkin,” he grunted in a near whisper. “I’m alright. You’re papa is going to be alright.”
He picked her up as he stood from the chair. He started out of her room and wondered down stairs by the fire. “Daddy should be home soon,” he said to Paprika. “So, it’s better down here by the fire.” He sat her on the sofa and, using his magic, her bunny came to her side. Her mouth opened in surprise at her bunny flying, and she hugged it tightly. He left her on the sofa in the kitchen, but he could see her on the sofa as she hugged her bunny. He looked in the cabinet and found wat was left of baby food. After this, she wouldn’t have enough food. He came in the room with a spoon and a bib for her. “Here we go, pumpkin,” he sung as he sat neck to her. “This is what we got left.”
It was only two spoonfuls of smashed peas, but it enough for now until Dust comes back. If there’s no more food for her, she might die—
No, Sans, don’t think that. She’s strong like her pops. He thought to himself as he gave her the last spoonful. She’s going to be alright.
He wiped away the sloop on her face. “That’s all we got, pumpkin.” But she didn’t care as she hugged her bunny again and showed it to him. “Yes, it’s your bunny.” He patted its head as they both let out a yawn. “You’re thinking what papa’s thinking, pumpkin.” He picked her up rested her head on his chest. She stay like that for a while until her eyes shut, drifting to sleep.
He leaned himself against the arm of the couch and let his eyes shut…
…to open again to Dust coming home. He looked down at his arms and watched Paprika sleep soundlessly, clinching her bunny in by its ears. Dust sat on the couch and leaned against him as they both watched her sleep. “Looks like you did good, huh?” Dust whispered as his fingertips brushed her skull.
Horror hummed his answer after kissing his mate on the temple. “I see we did good.”
Dust snuggled against his arm as he struggled to keep his eyes open. “I found some food for her,” he said slowly after a yawn. “I’m not sure if she’ll have enough to last the next week.” His voice was soft.
Horror watched the fire dance and twirl in his eyes. “Don’t worry, hon,” he whispered. “We’ll be okay.” The fire glowed on her tiny skull, and he whispered a small song to both of them:
“The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I will be your mother, and I'll hold your hand; you should know I'll be there for you. When the world's not perfect—when the world's not kind, if we have each other then we'll both be fine. I will be your lover, and I'll hold your hand… you should know I'll be there for you.”
When he finished, he looked over at them as they both slept close to him. He smiled to himself, feeling his SOUL pounding a gentle beat.

*That was a nice one after the other angst one. Just one more to go tomorrow or today! It really depends on my psychology homework. All in all, I hope y’all like this! I kind think Horror would be scare to be a dad, but he’ll do as good as his best. As long as he has those two, the underground will be better.*
