This was the @wellspringlutheranservices table at the #dreambigfair in Kentwood, MI this weekend. There is an over-representation of black families being reported and substantiated for child abuse and neglect in Kent County. African American children are only 10% of the population but 35% of kids in foster care. Statistics show that the majority of these children live in 49507 and 49503. Help! Black children in Grand Rapids, Michigan are being placed in foster care 3 times more than white children, mostly in 49507. Let's show the system we're watching and hold them accountable. The foster care admit that there aren't enough foster parents with experience with black and skin care. Parents are horrified to come to supervised visits and see ashy, nappy-headed kids that they barely recognize as their own. I'm organizing a Natural Hair & Skin Product Drive so agencies know we're watching and we care. I want those children and parents to know, we're watching and we care.
