They were (and are) pissed because these laws amend Section 230 of the US Communications Decency Act, which protect internet platforms from the actions of their users. That is why we keep hearing reports of SWs and supporters being banned and shadowbanned from social media. That is why we at ASW fear that at any moment Instagram will take our page down (don’t worry, we backed our shit up). And FUCKING LOL if you think SWs are the only people who will be silenced online. Section 230 didn’t exclusively target content related to SW and tr*fficking — it was the basis on which people could upload content to online platforms without being policed by hosts, and now it's compromised. And who do you think will be particularly vulnerable to such policing? I dunno, maybe those who are ALWAYS vulnerable to policing — marginalised groups, activists, anyone who dares to question authority. If you, like us, are upset about this, you can direct your concerns to Amy Schumer, Seth Meyers, Kamala Harris, and every NGO that conflates SW and tr*fficking at the expense of both SWs and tr*afficking survivors (and has been doing so for decades).
