Leyla could feel them watching her, catching glimpses of the guards as she walked along the streets. How had they followed her all the way here? This was miles from home. They shouldnât be here yet.
She forced herself to remain calm as she weaved through the crowds, making sure they never got a good look at her. As she passed an alley she turned down it calmly before tearing off at a dead run. Her hands worked quick to tug free one of the silk scarves from around her waist, laying it carefully over her hair to act as a shawl. It was a quick flip to change the primary color of her skirting, trying to blend and fade.
As she rounded the next corner she grabbed hold of a manâs shirt, pressing him back to the wall and crushing her lips to his as she heard the footsteps of her pursuers crashing along the alley. âJust play along.â she pleaded in a half whisper against his lips, grip holding tight to the leather itâd found.
