Hoofettes. Ginger Rogers may have been the most noted but here are five other great female movie dancers that might give her a run for money:
Cyd Charisse in The Band Wagon. D: Vincente Minnelli (1953). Fred Astaire’s OTHER great partner and my Dad’s favorite movie star. Watching her swirl a white cotton dress all over him (Astaire, not my Dad) in the “Dancing in the Dark” number, I know why.
Bernadette Peters in Pennies from Heaven. D: Herbert Ross (1981). Peters and Steve Martin are in a crummy movie house watching Astaire and Rogers. Steve starts lip synching to “Let’s Face the Music and Dance”. Then they both start dancing in front of the screen. Then they’re in the movie in tails and evening gown dancing like Fred and Ginger. They pull it off. This time she leads.
Ann Reinking in All That Jazz. D: Bob Fosse (1979). Didn’t work enough in movies (She was a Broadway Baby) but dancing to “Everything Old is New Again” (a birthday present) and “They’ll Be Some Changes Made” (a deathbed admonition) she was the only spark in this mortality mishmash.
Ann Margaret in Viva Las Vegas. D: George Sidney (1964). The sexiest dancing in an Elvis movie with the obvious exception and he had better material. And she shimmies to “What’d I Say” with as much verve as any Raelette.
Rosie Perez in Do the Right Thing. D: Spike Lee (1989). One of the great opening credits of any movie is just Perez flexing, sparring, and chicken legging through four minutes of Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power.” If it wasn’t gonna be the hottest day in Brooklyn before, it is now.
