Honky Honolulu - March 2014
Having gained another Sunday by crossing the world date border, Honolulu was at the ready to take it all back. My fellow traveller German Marc who I met at Mana Lagoon Backpackers and had shared the flight from Fiji with didnāt exactly help with his irate attitude. We were stranded at the airport. The first bus driver turned (Marc) away because our backpacks couldn't be stowed beneath the seat or on our laps, and we were now see-sawing between the "normal" bus (bargain at $2.50 for a 2h journey) and the shuttle buses ($25 for the journey). Luckily the kind shuttle bus girl suggested we try again and voila! Persistence paid! After 2h at the airport we were en-route toward central Honolulu... My couch surfing host Scott had promised to collect me from near his apartment so I got off in Sunday-quiet downtown Honolulu. After whiling time away at a seafront chain pub over a delicious German beer, my host picked me up. Scott was a sailing instructor with small boats to deliver so in a true seafaring manner, I was at the ready to help. The rest of the evening was spent chatting and cooking. Despite the bachelor paddiness of my hostās home, I was glad to settle down for a while and ended up staying extra few nights even if Honolulu itself really didnāt impress me - it just felt like a Vegas with a (real) beach. Despite couch surfing being a great and affordable way to travel and to get to know locals and their ways of life, after 5 days of cooking and cleaning (I even discovered a dead lizard behind a chest of drawers!), I felt the need to meet other travelers and promptly booked myself into Waikiki Hostelling International. My timing was perfect. The first meeting with my next-bed-neighbour Mariepier proved fruitful and the following day was spent road tripping Oahu with my 3 (new) favourite allies; English Christine, and the French-Canadians Mariepier et Marielle! Honolulu Highlights: -Snorkeling Hanauma Bay before the crowds mess up the seabeds and getting to meet the locals such as HumuĀhumunukuĀnukuĀÄpuaŹ»a - i.e. the Hawaiian Lagoon Triggerfish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagoon_triggerfish http://www.hanauma-bay-hawaii.com/getting-there.html -Sailing lesson with my couch-surfing host Scott and his young sailing student seasick-Steven at the Hawaii Yacht Club. Seeing a Hawaiian green turtle poke his head out of the sea during the lesson really was the turf on the surf! -Stumbling across the best sushi restaurant Sakura-ya on South Beretania Street. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g60982-d3863983-Reviews-Sakura_Ya-Honolulu_Oahu_Hawaii.html -Stumbling across Secret Treasures antiques and thrift shop, a treasure trove of everything and anything under the Hawaiian sun, from vintage furniture, toys and books to clothing and even amazingly sweet locally grown papayas! http://secrettreasures.net/Secret_Treasures/Home.html -Getting to witness some of the most amazing sunsets of my life over Waikiki beach. -Peter Lik photography gallery exhibition preview and almost bagging a job there! (Finding an $8 thrift dress to wear most probably aided.) Lovely Ina and Romy from Berlin who I had met that afternoon joined me and we had a dashing evening enjoying free canapĆ©s and drinks. http://www.lik.com/galleries/waikiki.html -Eating the best spicy garlic shrimps at Fumis Kahuku Shrimp Shack. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fumis-Kahuku-Shrimp/163293257105870?rf=152786958070999 -Exploring and adventuring further up the Oahu coast with French-Canadian Mariepier; Makapuāu Beach sacred site, blagging free entrance into the Sea Life Park and Hanauma Bay, and climbing up the Diamond Head. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makapu%CA%BBu -Surf and Turf spicy ahi poke taco for $4.95, best ahi in town. http://surfnturftacos.com/

#INFINIT&....
