I always chalked the sometimes-invisible arc-reactor to the fact that in some shots, he's wearing two shirts (the t-shirt and a long-sleeve shirt underneath, it looks like). That said, I haven't had my second watch yet.
yeah! that had been my argument as well but if i'm not mistaken, there were a few scenes aboard the helicarrier much prior to the "performance issue" incident, where stark was wearing double and the arc's light still shone through. i'll be sure to reconfirm this on 4th viewing.
