Holander shares new anti-social anthem ‘E-Girl’

LA’s glitter grunge princess Holander has shared her new single ‘E-Girl’. ‘E-Girl’ is an anti-social pop anthem about wanting to be alone and being overwhelmed by people loving and leaving. It’s a song for outcasts, E-Girls, and misfits. People who don’t fit in. “But in standing out, we find each other,” says Holander. “And we find ourselves more than we ever could if we were trying to 'fit in.’"

Holander embodies the bright lights and buzzing energy of a city after dark. She is your cotton candy BFF who can be seen drinking boy tears and throwing things around her room. Most recently, she toured nationally with HOLYCHILD (pre-pandemic) and kept busy during 2020 with the release of her singles ‘Car Crash’ and ‘The Quarantine Love Song.’ Her new single ‘E-Girl’ signals a new era for the 24-year-old, one that she calls “the Digital Queen era.”

"I chose ‘E-Girl’ to start the new era because it really encapsulates this new world of music that I refer to as 'Digital Queen,’” she goes on to say. “It has all the angst, heartbreak, empowerment, and independence rolled into one. It centers on being a true individual and finding that to be incredibly difficult and yet so rewarding. Being creative during COVID times has been tough on me, as I know it has been for a lot of artists. It’s been a time for me to process and self-reflect, more so than in normal life. I’m used to writing pretty literally about things that are going on in my life, and I’ve had to go more internal and learn how to write in a way that is more self-reflective about past events or dreaming of the future. I’ve also re-discovered other creative outlets like painting and dancing, which have opened up other avenues to generate song ideas from.”

Holander’s new video for “SMOKE” is a dramatic visual delight melting into a fever dream. With vibrant colors, a slow forming darkly dramatic story line, and 90’s edge it is a video that holds your attention the whole way through. The song itself is honest and relatable showing just how intense love and intimacy can truly be.

Holander - who is a general bad ass, singer, and female DJ is an amazing artist and soul that you should for sure keep your eyes and ears on. Below Holander shares why the song and video are so special to her, the hidden message within, and her experience filming the video.

Why is this song/video so special to you?

“The idea was to have a visual representation how love can quite literally knock you off of your feet, almost like a car crash. The almost violent immediacy of the emotions just makes me think 'high-impact.' I met with the director, Will, we met up several times in coffee shops where we were bouncing ideas off of each other and watching watched music videos we loved. He brought a really rad 90’s MTV nostalgia vibe that we cultivated into a stylized millennial narrative. 

What does the video expose about the song fans wouldn't necessarily put together?

The darker twist on the song; the true intensity of the emotion. The song definitely has an edge to it, but the video is meant to show the overwhelming nature of this feeling of being intoxicated by someone; its beauty but also how it can almost feel like a cinematic thriller movie thrust upon your life. I loved making the actual visual of smoke come to life and the smoke being blown into my mouth, the latter was a real experience that inspired the song itself.

What was your experience like filming the video? I cried the next day, from happiness. I felt like i was making the kind of art that I wanted to make. I was so flooded with gratitude for it. It's such a beautiful piece of art to me. I come from an acting background so I always love the various formats I get to act my music out. The opportunity to collaborate with other creatives and expand my song into a visual testament of that collaboration and connection is something I really appreciate about the industry.

Fantasies of time and place run as a constant driving force in the background of Los Angeles native Holander's electro-pop anthems. Raised in a city of people creating their own futures during the day and capturing flashy Hollywood lifestyles at night, Holander became obsessed and inspired by how people morph themselves into what is most viral at any time. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter channels this inspiration into creating stunning music that reflects many of the conflicts faced by her generation.

Holander, born Carly Harpur Hollander, grew up in a house full of music. She initially recorded cover songs on piano and guitar but quickly fell in love with the more electronic side of pop music and set out on a solo project to create the type of music she wanted to hear in the world. This allows Holander to pair introspective lyrics with messages meant to directly inspire action, on top of synth hooks that draw the listener to the track and keep them present in the moment.

Social action is one of Holander's strongest held values. Attending USC for social change, as well as practicing feminism and advocacy for LGBTQ and minority groups, Holander focuses her music on empowering herself and others. She writes from a position of strength in storytelling and is known for her poignant and direct lyricism.

The songstress' popular single 'Something Real' features glossy synths and soaring vocals, with a climactic singalong chorus. In her highly anticipated new single 'Smoke,', Holander showcases her musical diversity, incorporating dreamy baselines, intimate warm vocals, and iridescent soundscapes, distinguishing it from other songs in the genre. 'Smoke,' is a captivating love anthem about standing on the edge of love in your youth, and choosing to fully surrender. She confides, "When you’re overtaken by someone, it's like smoke in your lungs. I believe when two people love each other, they start to tap into the universal love - this love that is bigger, and connects us all."

Holander has packed popular venues throughout Los Angeles and played large festivals and shows that champion a cause. 'Smoke' is set for release Summer 2018 worldwide.
