āFrom early 90s to early noughties, HMV released a lot of excellent music through their own HMV Classics label. I bought several CDs from this collection, available only from their own stores. It was an economical way of listening to a wide range of excellent recordings, before the world of streaming services and the sad demise of HMV itself. This may well have been one of the first that I bought, but I really canāt remember. . Itās an excellent recording, with superstars from the world of baroque and renaissance music such as Gregorio Allegri, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons and Henry Purcell. Then there are other, more recent composers, fulfilling the āother spiritual classicsā from the album title: Faure, Poulenc and Durufle making up the French contingent, the Englishmen Edward Elgar and John Tavener, and then two very recent British composers, Elizabeth Poston (the only female composer here) and Geoffrey Burgon, who I discovered (via the magic of Wikipedia) also composed the music for Monty Pythonās Life of Brian. . That might sound a right old hotchpotch of musical styles, but the compilation works exquisitely, taking Allegriās Miserere mei as itās soundboard, bookended by the equally gorgeous Spem in alium by Tallis. Elgarās Ave verum corpus and Faureās Pie Jesu from his Requiem are highlights in between, but thereās something for everyone here. That is, if by spiritual you mean from the Christian faith. I know of few other compilations that can successfully cover 450 years of music on one CD...ā .
