so the the broader concept of the epilogue(s) that both of these are potential timelines that could and DID happen, but not necessarily the only course of events. which is why its "beyond canon." like while thematically im still trying to figure how where exactly the whole idea of within canon/being watched sort of Means, these ideas are canonically relevant. once homestuck proper ended, the characters are no longer within the purview of the audience. we don't get to know what happens, becuase "canon" is now closed off to us. so epilogues/hsbc is a "version" of events but it is not necessarily the "truest" version of events. it is relevant and holds weight existentially, but it isn't the only way that things could happen. i dont think that continuing the story in a way i think is silly is on its face an issue necessarily, especially with a story like homestuck which is so hinged on the concept of alternate realities and versions of events it isn't so outside the realm of possibility. even if narratively i don't think things needed to keep going i like. don't have a problem with the existence of the epilogues on their face. i even think they could be good as like .. optional spinoff content that is focused on adjacent but ultimately extraneous themes of the original comic.
meat review:
i actually, :CAUGHT:, enjoyed meat. i was complaining because parts of it completely suck. jane and jade's characterizations are inexcusable. like i said in my original post i think jade having loneliness as a core part of her character IS relevant and interesting to elaborate on, but using that as a tool to make her the villain in the series' flagship yaoi is just like. completely sucks. and jane i really can't figure out why she was like that. instead of taking any sort of left field, jake's characterization was dumbed down and his interiority completely dismissed. this is true for both routes. not great. moving on.
conceptually, meat dials in on themes that already existed in the original comic, and strains them until they pop in your face. homestuck has a very distinct narrative voice, which is usually established as hussie themself, meaning the narration has personality and an extremely loose connection to the narrative but ultimately no motivation to be unreliable. a specific narrator is mainly used for gags and gimmicks (hussie arguing with vriska, caliborn taking over the narration to demonstrate his control over reality, doc scratch, etc). while this isn't leveraged in any serious way in homestuck proper, it does explicitly establish the fourth wall as a character. we, the audience, are watching these people live, hussie has vague control over their actions (but not complete control) (>retrieve arms >shit on your desk). this degree of control is specifically out of the audience's hands, and our status as a voyeur, and never a participant, is similarly explicit (ie jokes about "free will" with character selection screens).
so that said, i genuinely think the idea of "what if the narrator were someone more hostile and meddling" is an interesting consideration. how far does free will go, how much are these characters stuck in the story that someone else is trying to tell, can we even trust the narrator to begin with, how is watching in itself an act of violence? dirk's narration gets increasingly cruel and personal as he drops the illusion of impartiality.
the biggest problem obviously is that the sequence of events hinges on dirk as a megalomaniacal pervert who is like so insanely egotistical and self-obsessed that he will cruelly manipulate his friends to his insane machinations. the intent seems to be "this is what dirk was afraid of becoming/couldve become when he learned what dave's bro was like" but there is zero indication as to why exactly this happened considering he seemed pretty solidly not that when homestuck prime ended. while i don't imagine that being tormented by himself and his potential for cruelty has ENDED by the conception of earth c, i certainly cannot see the 180 that is represented by meat.
the epilogues are much less afraid to take themselves seriously than the original comic. i genuinely loved the writing. the individual characters' voices are a highlight, as usual, and this does come through in dirk's narration even though he is basically a whole other guy. it is disturbing and weird and uncomfortable, more often in a fun way than in a genuinely "why the fuck did you write that" way.
candy review:
i have less to say on this one because it is really just so awful to get through truly. on its face i don't think that candy is a bad idea. it is the heteronormative suburban post-canon, but it is AWARE that that's what it is and it hinges on the horrible horrible feeling of wrongness in that, and how everything becomes so awful because that's not how things "should've" gone, and they only went that way because john was complacent when he needed to act, and complacency leads to the bungalow at the end of the cul-de-sac. its an isolated timeline that will never be terminated like a doomed timeline would, but is also impossible to escape. however ☝️there's a point where this horror just becomes like. i take no joy in being like "too far" but TOO FUCKING FAR. pointlessly disgusting. absolutely entirely dissonant from the original comic. just horrible drivel, a misery circlejerk for people who want to see how mad and disturbed they can make their audience. could be interesting commentary, drops the ball as soon as callie asks john to bring gamzee back, which is page one.
