I FUUUCKIIINNGG LOOOVE AGENT-47
Hitman: Absolution ("I am a man with a particular set of skills")
Bald, bad-ass, and slightly disturbing sums up Agent 47 and his methods in Hitman: Absolution.
It has been six long years for Agent 47 to be reborn onto the current generation of consoles, but the wait was well worth it. 47 has been transformed into a sharper, more cunning, and more sophisticated assassin. Even with a few changes, hardcore fans have nothing to fear as the tradition of Hitman is alive and well.
In his newest adventure, Agent 47 has been tasked with the assassination of his past contract handler and only friend, Diana. Diana has taken ICA (International Contract Agency) secrets and disappeared. 47's current handler at ICA, Benjamin Travis, has given 47 the task of assassinating Diana for this treason. Cold and methodical, Agent 47 does what he was created to do.
As Agent 47 squeezes the trigger on his silenced AMT Hardballer, Diana falls sharply to the tiled floor and whispers her final words to 47. In this moment he realizes he has made a terrible mistake. On his path to absolution Agent 47 finds that Diana was safeguarding a young girl who has been experimented on by ICA. This girl is a prize for ICA and enemies abroad. With over confidence and no regard to body count, 47 will preserve Diana's dying wish.
Hitman fans will not be disappointed as David Bateson reprises his infamous role as the stone cold voice of Agent 47.
Dark, psychotic, disgusting, and outlandish characters fill the ranks of the story. Obviously, this is not a kids game. Mature themes galore. Can you say skin tight leather thigh-high wearing nun assassins?
With Absolution hitting new gaming hardware, environments are bigger and much more detailed than ever before. The gameplay can be described as fairly standard. Agent 47 can walk, run, and crouch. He can now stick to cover, making for stealthier area insertions, he can also climb, and hide within containers.
Levels are broken down into sections. To better explain, Agent 47 may have to make his way through the dock, then the garden, and finally the mansion. Each section has its own objectives and enemies that are independent from the other sections in the level.
The varying of environments provides a fresh take on the series. Fiber wire in the cornfields, dashing over rooftops in the pouring rain, and sniping in old ruins provide a great deal of fun and adventure.
Agent 47 would not be The Hitman if it was not for his multitude of abilities and arsenal. Disguises are abundant and provide full ambiguity from people other than the disguise. For example, a police officer disguise works best when not around other officers. Police officers and other people tend to take more notice to their own disguises. The disguise system works on a special meter newly found in Absolution. The instinct meter, which has been touted by developers and disliked by gamers, allows 47 to see through walls, anticipate guard paths, and slip by the most keen of eyes. Basically, instinct lets 47 make a scenario slightly easier. If players find it pointless, then they can simply not use it.
The arsenal of The Hitman straddles the line between obsessive and disturbing. The classic load-out of fiber wire, silenced AMT Hardballer, and lock pick follows Agent 47 just about everywhere. Other weapons and equipment can be found during each level. A likable gameplay element includes the ability to holster a rifle. This makes no sense, but allows for easier transitions between items.
I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE FUTURE! It has to be known that the saving system is quite...wacky. Agent 47 must find a save symbol in the level to produce a quick-save. No sense can be made of this. Maybe the developers were encouraging exploration within the game, but why not allow the player to save.
Outside the saving system, there are no terrible issues. Enemy alertness is a personal preference, but that is a give and take developers have struggled with for years.
To kill two birds with one stone, weapons, equipment, and objects become collectibles for 47 to find.
Five difficulty levels allow any type of player to become the best of assassins.
The online Contacts experience comprises player built assassination levels. Players pick a level and targets for other Absolution players to eliminate. A unique idea that allows for much more playing time.
Overall, Absolution keeps the legend of Agent 47 alive. It is a shame it has taken so long to produce another in the series. We can only hope the next gen consoles will sustain Baldy for years to come. 9/10.
