The Ghost of Green Lane

There’s something hauntingly beautiful about old postcards of buildings that no longer serve their original purpose.

Featured here is The Hippodrome, Derby, circa 1924. Part of “The Nevitsky Collection,” this card captures the theater during the height of the variety era. You can see the bustling energy of Green Lane and the grand entrance that once welcomed over 2,000 patrons a night.

Fast Facts:

Opened: July 1914 with ‘September Morn.’

1924 Headliner: Fred Duprez in the ‘Manhattan Follies’ (as seen on the marquee!).

Legacy: It’s rumored that the famous song “Underneath the Arches” was written in the dressing rooms here.

While the building is currently at risk, we’re keeping its memory alive through the art of the postcard.
