One of my favourite snaps from on our epic silk road trip in 2017. Taken in Kashgar, this could be a scene from anywhere in Central Asia. Even though it was only 3 years ago, it is unlikely this place looks like this today.Â
Having travelled to Malaysia many times since I was a baby, it was polarising to see how Ramadan was observed in Kashgar and Urumqi. We crossed the border into Kyrgyzstan to find a completely different world. We never heard the call to prayer in Urumqi or Kashgar but waited until sunset before dinner was served in Osh. Streets were buzzing at night in Osh and Bishkek but deserted as soon as it was dark in Urumqi and Kashgar.Â
